The works in this ground-breaking book include erotic drawings both formal and informal, many which have never before been published. Condition: Sehr gut. 305 S. Einband berieben. - This Biennale Centenary offered me the opportunity to attempt a critique of the system of avant-gardes and of certain idees regues. What has become of the history of modern art which saw Cezanne as the founding father? What has become of the history of modern art which saw the autonomy the self-referentiality-of the work of art as its ultimate-goal? What has become of the idea of art as shaking off the burden of usefulness that it had been carrying for more than a thousand years? What has become of the Clement Greenberg's ideas, which for more than a quarter of a century were the mainstay of art history-and of the art market? Formalism, the modernist litany of A Cube is a Cube is a Cube, the abrupt tautologies of American Art-did all that and the rest of it really amount to the nee plus ultra of artistic creation in the second half of the twentieth century? Pollock as successor to Cezanne and precursor of Robert Morris? A history of triumphs, told in a religious key-with prophets, advents, parousia and rituals? And yet before his death Greenberg himself disowned his own ideas-cruelly, in an article written with lucid despair. Who dares to cite those final words, recall that last pirouette? (Jean Clair). Einband leicht berieben. - Englisch. - On the heels of the Roaring Twenties, the 1930s, which spanned from the economic crisis of 1929 to the outbreak of the Second World War, was a dark decade. Political regimes - authoritarian or totalitarian - came to power or were consolidated and guided by leaders who often inspired their names Francoism in Spain, Stalinism in the Soviet Union, National Socialism in Germany, and Fascism in Italy. Beyond similar governmental mechanisms, these regimes shared an ideology: the will to create what they called the "New Man." At one extreme, this took the form of social re-education and the elimination of the "bourgeois" classes (USSR); at the other extreme, a racialist policy of elimination of peoples declared "degenerate" as well as those whose lives were deemed "unworthy" (Germany). This ideology, which directly affected the images and portrayals of man, naturally reached into the world of art. The era was represented by a healthy, vigorous, athletic, sporting, "eugenic" man, while the avant-garde currents of expressionism and surrealism were banned. On the one hand, "eternal" examples of "unsurpassable" Greek beauty were evoked; on the other, representations deemed unhealthy or degenerate were denounced. This decade began with a more or less innocent dream of the theme of the original egg, germination, the harmonious growth of a fabric both biological and social, but ended with the nightmarish discovery of the corpses in the concentration camps by the armies of liberation in 1945.
