Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a glimpse into the lives of English Catholics in the decades following the Act of Settlement, 1701. It compiles information taken from their own registrations of estates and property, which the act obliged them to submit to the state. The book's value lies in the light… it sheds on the lives of everyday Catholics during a period of intense anti-Catholic feeling. The author focuses on the gentry and wealthy landowners among them, whose estates, yielding an income of at least £100 a year, made them subject to the act. While this was ostensibly a way to prevent Catholics from illegally supporting the exiled Stuart Pretender, it also meant that a significant number of them are now rendered visible in the historical record. The book deftly uses these estates as a lens through which to explore the challenges faced by Catholics as they attempted to retain their properties and secure their financial futures. Ultimately, it prompts us to question how religious persecution can lead to new archival sources that illuminate the past. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
