Tempest & Sunshine / The Lamplighter (Odyssey Press, 1968) combines two classic 19th-century American novellas: Tempest and Sunshine by Mary Jane Holmes (originally 1854) is set in rural Kentucky and follows two sisters: impulsive and passionate Julia ("Tempest") and gentle, kind-hearted Fanny ("Sunshine"). When Dr. Lacey arrives, both sisters fall under his spellJulia schemes to win him by intercepting letters between him and Fanny. Just as Julia is about to marry Lacey, her plot is exposed by Bill Jeffreys, who intervenes and reunites the rightful pair, leading to forgiveness and restoration . The Lamplighter by Maria Susanna Cummins (originally 1854) is a sentimental coming-of-age tale centered on Gertrude Flint, a neglected orphan rescued by Trueman Flint, a kind lamplighter. Through his guidance and her own perseverance, she grows into a morally upright and compassionate adult, ultimately finding heartfelt love and stability in her later life . Together, these two novellas offer heartfelt moral dramasone about sisterly rivalry and redemption, the other about resilience and virtue in the face of hardship.

During the twentieth century, Indonesia had limited means to keep natural disaster fatalities from rising commensurately with the explosive growth in population. This situation is changing rapidly, however, with major political and economic advances over the past two decades having led to substantial investments in seismic and geodetic infrastructure. The potential for advances in earth science to reduce natural disaster fatalities in Indonesia has never been greater. This Special Publication documents some of the recent advances made by Earth scientists that contribute towards a better understanding of geological hazards in Indonesia.
