Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke (6 August 1605 28 July 1675) was an English lawyer, writer, parliamentarian and Lord Keeper of the Great Seal of England. With details of the Swedish alliance negotiated by Whitelocke between Oliver Cromwell and Christina, Queen of Sweden. Complete in two volumes. Rebacked in red cloth with original boards preserved. Externally, sound, though with wear to the extremities and marks to the boards. Bumping to the spine also. Hinges tender, with endpapers working loose. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Ink annotations to title page. Pages have some marginal browning and some institutional ink stamps, but are otherwise clean. Good Only. book.

First Edition. Gift inscription dated 1873 from the ancestor of Edward, James Grimston, 2nd Earl of Verulam (also known as Lord Grimston) to his siter Lady Jane Frederica Harriet Mary Grimston (Jan. 17, 1825?1888) who had married James Alexander, 3rd Earl of Caledon. The previously unpublished narrative of Sir Edward Grimston - tried (and acquitted) for treason after surrendering Calais to the Duke of Guise in 1558. He escaped from the Bastille in 1559 and presented himself for trial. Later served in parliament. Privately printed with the intention of it being lodged with the Philobiblon Society where it was published in their miscellaneous papers. The editor thanks the Earl of Verulam for his permission to copy so this was presumably a copy bound for him privately. Half leather on purble boards which ar eunevenly faded. Internally foxed particularly to prelims. Published without a title page, 47pp. VG. Scarce.

Bound in original maroon cloth, gilt, with gilt borders on front boards and blocks at tail of spines, which are sunned. Patterned endpapers. A little wear to extremities and occasional scattered foxing, but otherwise a very good set. Signatures on free endpapers, mostly in pencil. Vol. I illustrated by portrait frontispiece. The diaries of Charles Cavendish Fulke Greville (1794-1865), sportsman and Clerk of the Council in ordinary, 1821-59, provide an insider's view of the private lives of politicians and people in society for the period 1818-59. Publication of the first volume in 1874 (the other parts followed in 1885 and 1887) caused a controversy and was condemned by Queen Victoria and Benjamin Disraeli downwards as an outrageous breach of confidence and a scandalous critique of persons in high authority. It had to withdrawn and parts of it suppressed before it could be reissued. Greville had entrusted publication to his subordinate, the Whig writer, Henry Reeve (1813-95), Clerk of Appeal from 1837 and then Registrar of the Judiciary Committee of the Privy Council, who edited the Memoirs.
