"The story of John Clare's life was first set down more than a hundred years ago, and it has captured the imagination of the reading public ever since. It has never been told more vividly or with greater poignancy than by John Clare himself, and in this volume Eric Robinson has brought together Clare's snatches of autobiography to create a compelling narrative." John Clare Society Membeship card affixed to FP. Both book and unclipped dust jacket are in excellent condition. The jacket is contained within an easily removed clear protective plastic cover. John Clare (13 July 1793 - 20 May 1864) was an English poet. The son of a farm labourer, he became known for his celebrations of the English countryside and his sorrows at its disruption. His work underwent major re-evaluation in the late 20th century; he is now often seen as a major 19th-century poet. His biographer Jonathan Bate called Clare "the greatest labouring-class poet that England has ever produced. No one has ever written more powerfully of nature, of a rural childhood, and of the alienated and unstable self." The Shepherd's Calendar is his masterpiece. It is a classic of English poetry and a fascinating work of social history, recording long-vanished aspects of nineteenth-century rural life. The poem provides a calendar of the country year, in which the various tasks performed by the farm labourer take their place: ploughing in February, lambing in March, and hay-making in June. The countryman's year is also punctuated by celebrations and festivals, such as May Day games, sheep-shearing feasts, Harvest Home, and Christmas. Rooted in popular culture, the poem has many vivid descriptions of the flowers, birds, and beasts of the hedgerow and field. This reissue, first published in 1964 and in a second edition in 1993, is published to coincide with the 150th anniversary of John Clare's death. It includes charming wood engravings by David Gentleman. Ref P 3.
