Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Various Illustrators (illustrator). First Edition. Stated First Edition at copyright page. Copyright 1963 by Emmett McLoughlin. Classic gray, dark gray and white marbled boards with deep blue spine titles, moderate shelf wear, toning. Pages near fine, clean. Imagery throughout depicting characters and events from story. Includes detailed bibliographical chapter notes, a bibliography and a five-page index. Bind fine, square; hinges intact. Original 1960s dust wrapper design, light shelf wear, rub; unclipped 4.95, protected in new clear sleeve. Near fine first edition in same wrapper. Some of author's previous works include: "Crime and Immortality in the Catholic Church; Portrait of an Ex-Priest; Priest to Citizen; No Short Cut to Heaven; and, Freemasonry- America's Sleeping Giant." Former Catholic priest Emmett McLoughlin takes down the stone wall of silence and taboo surrounding the story of the part played by the Roman Catholic Church in the conspiracy, event, and aftermath. The best evidence of church involvement in Abraham Lincoln's murder is the financial assistance and physical sanctuary given to John Wilkes Booth's co-conspirator. John Surratt fled to Rome by way of Canada and England, with the help of priests, and served in the army of Pope Pius IX before being extradited for trial in Washington, D.C. Other conspirators in the assassination had Catholic connections, detailed here. But more than half of this book is devoted to describing what the Emmett McLoughlin sees as the toxic atmosphere arising from church disapproval of American institutions in general, and Lincoln in particular. Examples of such conditions are the 1863 Irish Catholic draft riots in New York, tacitly approved by the local archbishop; and the papal support of a European monarch in Mexico, with ambitions of extending its empire north. Maximilian I, an Austrian archduke became emperor of the Second Mexican Empire in 1864 whom Pius IX was eventually disappointed with and was executed by the Mexican Republic in 1867. Pius IX also encouraged Jefferson Davis in opposition to Lincoln. Surratt's mother was hanged for her involvement in the plot, but John Surratt's trial ended in a deadlocked jury, even after the first panel was dismissed because most of its members were Catholic. He went on to teach in Catholic schools. At his death in 1916, John Surratt was honored with a Solemn High Requiem Mass. Printed in the United States of America. 190 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall. Book.
