Gift Quality !! Soft cover, with glossy card covers, staple bound folded chapbook style. Wonderful book to share with children or if you love classic English literature, this one is for you! ~ About the story: "Cinderella", or "The Little Glass Slipper", is a folk tale with thousands of variants that are told throughout the world. The protagonist is a young girl living in forsaken circumstances that are suddenly changed to remarkable fortune, with her ascension to the throne via marriage. The story of Rhodopis, recounted by the Greek geographer Strabo sometime between 7 BCE and 23 CE, about a Greek slave girl who marries the king of Egypt, is usually considered to be the earliest known variant of the Cinderella story. ~ About the series publisher: George Routledge and Sons: The firm originated in 1836, when the London bookseller George Routledge published an unsuccessful guidebook, The Beauties of Gilsland, with his brother-in-law W. H. (William Henry) Warne as assistant. In 1848, the pair entered the booming market for selling inexpensive imprints of works of fiction to rail travellers, in the style of the German Tauchnitz family, which became known as the "Railway Library". ~ The company was restyled in 1858 as Routledge, Warne & Routledge when George Routledge's son, Robert Warne Routledge, entered the partnership. Frederick Warne eventually left the company after the death of his brother W. H. Warne in May 1859 (died aged 37). Gaining rights to some titles, he founded Frederick Warne & Co. in 1865, which became known for its Beatrix Potter books. In July 1865, George Routledge's son Edmund Routledge became a partner, and the firm became George Routledge & Sons. Illustrated throughout by wood engravings, including frontispiece. Decorated by additional engraved title, by title page, head and tailpiece vignettes, by initials and by colophons The Arabian Nights was first published in the French edition originally by Antoine Galland in twelve volumes, 1704-17, as Mille et Une Nuit. The first English translation of part of it had appeared as early as 1706. Galland (1646-1715) was a French orientalist and antiquary to Louis XIV. He derived the Sindbad the Sailor tales from sources in Constantinople and the rest from a Syrian fourteenth century manuscript, although the origins of the Ali Baba and Aladdin stories is unknown as they don't appear in Arabic manuscripts. This copiously illustrated Ward Lock edition is undated but may well be the first of 1865, as the publishing house was titled Ward, Lock, and Tyler only from 1865-73. The text was revised and amended by Henry William Dulcken (1832-94), translator and children's writer. The numerous wood engravings were the product of the Dalziel Brothers wood engraving workshop, run principally by George Dalziel (1815-1902), who founded the business in 1839 and his brother Edward (1817-1905). It was responsible for illustrating numerous Victorian publications and working with the major artists of the day, in the case of this work including Tenniel and Millais. ART / LITERATURE ARABIA LIT. Some of author's previous works include: "Crime and Immortality in the Catholic Church; Portrait of an Ex-Priest; Priest to Citizen; No Short Cut to Heaven; and, Freemasonry- America's Sleeping Giant." Former Catholic priest Emmett McLoughlin takes down the stone wall of silence and taboo surrounding the story of the part played by the Roman Catholic Church in the conspiracy, event, and aftermath. The best evidence of church involvement in Abraham Lincoln's murder is the financial assistance and physical sanctuary given to John Wilkes Booth's co-conspirator. John Surratt fled to Rome by way of Canada and England, with the help of priests, and served in the army of Pope Pius IX before being extradited for trial in Washington, D.C. Other conspirators in the assassination had Catholic connections, detailed here. But more than half of this book is devoted to describing what the Emmett McLoughlin sees as the toxic atmosphere arising from church disapproval of American institutions in general, and Lincoln in particular. Examples of such conditions are the 1863 Irish Catholic draft riots in New York, tacitly approved by the local archbishop; and the papal support of a European monarch in Mexico, with ambitions of extending its empire north. Maximilian I, an Austrian archduke became emperor of the Second Mexican Empire in 1864 whom Pius IX was eventually disappointed with and was executed by the Mexican Republic in 1867. Pius IX also encouraged Jefferson Davis in opposition to Lincoln. Surratt's mother was hanged for her involvement in the plot, but John Surratt's trial ended in a deadlocked jury, even after the first panel was dismissed because most of its members were Catholic. He went on to teach in Catholic schools. At his death in 1916, John Surratt was honored with a Solemn High Requiem Mass. Printed in the United States of America. 190 pages. Insured post. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall. Book.
