On Behalf of the Governor's of the Hospital. June 1923."ÂFrom the Library of the Edward, The Duke of Windsor. Rare and desirable. Founded in 1123 by Anglo-Norman monk Rahere, St. Bartholomewâs Hospital was granted to the Corporation of London in 1546 which endowed it with income entitlements. The Hospital has a rich history as a hub of medical and surgical research from the 17th century to present day, including the development of the principles of modern surgery by Percivall Pott and John Abernethy and the advancement of the nursing profession by Mrs. Bedford Fenwick. In 1843, St. Bartholomewâs Hospital Medical College was established and the present School of Nursing and Midwifery was formed in 1994. Edward VIII was King of the United Kingdom from January 1936 until his abdication in December the same year. Only months into his reign, he caused a constitutional crisis by proposing marriage to Wallis Simpson, an American who had divorced her first husband and was seeking a divorce from her second. When it became apparent that he could not marry Wallis and remain on the throne, Edward abdicated. He was succeeded by his younger brother, George VI. With a reign of 326 days, Edward was one of the shortest-reigning monarchs in British history.

The future Edward VIII writes to his mistress with shocking indifference to the death of his epileptic brother, Prince John, expressing gladness that the "more of an animal" boy had passed and regretting only that the mourning would interrupt his partying. Freda Dudley Ward, a married English socialite, was Edward's mistress fro…m 1918 to 1929. Winston Churchill observed in 1927, "It is quite pathetic to see the Prince and Freda. His love is so obvious and undisguisable" (Ziegler, p. 89). Edward was then visiting military divisions in Europe. On 17 January 1919 he writes enclosing "the teeny calendar which is now thine": a copy of the "Bond Street" Calendar for 1919, inscribed by him with a sequence of first letters of words from a poem they admired. He comments on rumours he was engaged to Lady Cynthia Curzon, and states that he is headquartered in a former chemical factory. The second letter, dated 18 January, finds him exulting that "I'm nearly through now, only a church parade tomorrow morning & then goodbye-ee to this filthy Rhineland & all these - - Huns!". He did not yet know that Prince John, aged 13, had died that day following a seizure. John had suffered from epilepsy since childhood and spent his final years in seclusion at Sandringham; his condition was made public only after his death. In the next letter, dated 20 January, Edward had heard the news: "I'm in a fever, beloved one, as I arrived here about 4:00 P.M. to find a wire from H.M. [the King] to say that my youngest brother had died & that I wasn't to go to Paris; I wired back to say that I was returning to England at once for a few days. I had great & wonderful hopes of seeing TOI [his pet name for her] tomorrow evening if the goddess of fortune had been kind to us. I'm so miserable darling as I've just got another wire from H.M. telling me not to return to England". The King apparently refused to allow Edward to return to London because he did not want the funeral to become a public event. Edward continues, "Isn't it all too heartbreaking & of course my little brother's death plunges me into mourning; don't think me very cold-hearted, sweetheart, but I've told you all about that little brother, darling, & how he was an epileptic & might have gone West any day!! He's been practically shut up for the last 2 years anyhow, so no-one has ever seen him except the family & then only once or twice a year & his death is the greatest relief imaginable & what we've always silently prayed for; but to be plunged into mourning for this is the limit just as the war is over which cuts parties etc. right out!! No-one would be more cut up if any of my other 3 brothers were to die than I should be, but this poor boy had become more of an animal than anything else & was only a brother in the flesh & nothing else!!". The letters are lengthy and wide-ranging. They are published in part in Letters from a Prince, edited by Rupert Godfrey, 1998. Commenting on the 20 January letter, one historian judged: "Selfish and narcissistic, Edward appeared to be more upset about missing a few parties in Paris and a rendezvous with his mistress than the actual death of his brother" (Greig, p. 144). Geordie Greig, King Maker, 2014; Philip Ziegler, King Edward VIII, 1992. 3 letters, handwritten in pencil continuously on 3 sheets (2 sheets 251 x 200 mm, the third 201 x 124 mm), together with small calendar (see note), in envelope with black wax seal and franked in London on 24 January 1919. Envelope a little soiled and roughly opened; letters in fine condition.

With a second typed letter signed by the Duke of Windsor letter dated 21st January, 1942 preserved in an archival plastic sleeve and tucked into a pocket at rear. One page, on the Duke of Windor's Government House Bahamas letterhead, the first letter is dated 3rd February, 1941 and reads in part: Dear Sarazen, My grateful thanks for your letter of January 24th and for the fine set of golf clubs which have arrived here safely. I hardly tell you how delighted I am with this handsome gift. The Duchess, who is President of our local branch of the Red Cross, appreciates as much as I do, your suggesting to the Manager of the four tennis stars, that they should come to Nassau to play some exhibition matches in aid of the Red Cross. But the big event of the winter season will be yours, Bobby Jones', Walter Hagen's and Tommy Armour's visit in March and I can assure you all a very warm welcome and a keenly interested gallery, even if our gold course is not up to the standard you are used to. With my renewed thanks for your fine and welcome gift, Believe me, Yours sincerely, "Edward." Handsomely mounted and framed with an original ticket from the event with the printed details: Bahamas Country Club Nassau Bahamas Benefit Match in Aid of the Bahamas Red Cross Under the Distinguished Patronage of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor Bobby Jones and Tommy Armour vs. Walter Hagen and Gene Sarazen Sunday, March 16th 1941. The ticket is boldly signed by all four golfers. The second letter, in a folder at rear, pocket at rear is dated 21st January, 1942 and reads in part: Dear Sarazen, The Duchess and I greatly appreciate your suggestion that you and Hagen play a match for the Red Cross here, but in view of the fact that I have already refused an offer of Fred Corcoran to organize a charity match as last year, and owing to American's entry into the war, there will be no winter tourist season to speak of, I really do not think it would be an auspicious time to organize anything for the Red Cross along the lines you suggest. Looking forward to playing with you again and with my best wishes, Believe me, Sincerely yours, "Edward." Mounted, matted, and framed. The letters measure 8.75 inches by 6.25 inches. The entire piece measures 23 inches by 14.25 inches. After the abdication crisis of 1936, the Duke of Windsor (formerly King Edward VIII) was appointed Governor of the Bahamas (1940â"1945). During his tenure in Nassau, he and the Duchess became prominent social figures, hosting and supporting high-profile events, including charity functions. The Bahamas in the late 1930sâ"early 1940s was a fashionable winter destination for wealthy Americans and British elites. Golf exhibitions featuring major champions were popular fundraising attractions including exhibition matches staged at the Bahamas Country Club in aid of local and wartime charities such as the Bahamas Red Cross. One such benefit brought together an extraordinary field of major champions â" Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, and Tommy Armour â" whose appearance in Nassau underscored both the colonyâs status as an elite winter resort and the Duke and Duchess of Windsorâs role as highly visible patrons of philanthropic and social events during the governorship. These tournaments functioned simultaneously as charitable fundraisers, society occasions, and instruments of soft diplomacy, linking British colonial administration with American sporting celebrity at a moment of global instability. Presentation copy, inscribed by Edouard Detaille in French to Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor in the year of Detaille's death. The inscription translates as: "My Lord, In my Bo…ulevard Malesherbes Studio, where his Majesty King Edward Vii and His Majesty King George have often come, your Royal Highness found himself at home. It is a great honor for me and also a great pleasure that I am happy to witness. Your Royal Highness, with the assurance of my faithful and respectful devotion. Edouard Detaille June 20 1912." From the collection of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor became the second monarch of the House of Windsor upon King George IV's death in 1936. The new king showed impatience with court protocol, and caused concern among politicians by his apparent disregard for established constitutional conventions. Only months into his reign, a constitutional crisis was caused by his proposal to marry Wallis Simpson, an American who had divorced her first husband and was seeking a divorce from her second. When it became apparent he could not marry Wallis and remain on the throne, he abdicated. He was succeeded by his younger brother, George VI.ÂIn good condition. Noted for his precision and realistic detail, French academic painter and military artist Jean-Baptiste Ãdouard Detaille was widely regarded as the "semi-official artist of the French army.".
