August 1870 in Baltimore geboren, studierte an der John Hopkins University sowie in München Chemie und Medizin und wurde 1893 Dr.phil. in München, 1898 Dr.med. in Straßburg. Nach seiner Assistentenzeit in Baltimore, 1894-95, trat er 1896 als Assistent in das Pharmakologische Institut in Straßburg (Schmiedeberg), habilitierte sich hier 1900 für Pharmakologie (1906 Tit. Prof.) und folgte 1907 dem Ruf als Ordinarius nach Würzburg. 1920 übersiedelte er in die Schweiz, wo er als Vorstand der Biologischen Abteilung der Gesellschaft für chemische Industrie (bis 1923) und als Dozent an der Basler Universität wirkte. Er starb am 14. September 1928. Eine Autorität auf dem Gebiete der tierischen Gifte entdeckte er auch das Sepsin, wies zum ersten mal die immunisatorische Wirkung der abiureten Gifte nach, befaßte sich mit der Wirkung des Morphins im thierischen Organismus und mit synthetischen Herzmitteln, besonders mit synthetischen Digitalis. Er bearbeitete die Kapitel über tierische Gifte für das Handbuch von Mohr-Staehlin, für das Abderhaldensche Handbuch der biologischen Arbeitsmethoden und für das Handbuch der Tropenkrankheiten."
