Add to basketEILEEN MAYO (illustrator). The story of the world. Mapped and decorated by Eileen Mayo. Produced by J. R. Fawcett Thompson). . Published: [London, Universal Textbooks ltd. 1938] iii p., 1 l., v-viii, 533, [1] p : col. front., illus., 6 Col. double maps ; 27 cm. Approximately 10.5 inches x 7.75 inches x 1.25 inches. This rare children's book on the countries of the world was produced in mid 1938 in the UK. It appears to have been intended as a social studies text for children. Published on the eve of World War II, in mid-1938 and after the Anschluss of Austria by Nazi Germany. "The Story of the World" was published just over a year before the outbreak of World War II. You can read in its opening sentence a hint of the coming storm: "If we are to have some understanding of the causes underlying the complex international problems which threaten the well-being of the world today, we will do well to acquire some true knowledge of the earth's peoples, their lands, their ways of living and their history". Although undated, the book clearly went to print between March and September of 1938. It lists Hitler's annexation of Austria that March, March of 1938: Hitler annexes Austria by bullying and intimidation, without a shot fired (the "Anschluss.") This is Hitler's first major conquest. This book goes to press, noting that Austria is now part of Germany. This rare book is beautifully illustrated by Eileen Mayo. There are full colour illustrations for major areas of the world (Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, the Americas, Polar Regions), as well as full colour front and end 2-page displays showing animals, partial-colour illustrations and many spot colour photo borders throughout, and black and white photos through the book. The cover is specially embossed, with a map of the world and an embossed illustration showing a variety of wildlife. The book is in generally good condition, the corners are a bit bumped, and there's a tiny spot that's a bit rough on the lower edge. There is a previous owners name on the reverse of frontis page. A HEAVY BOOK WHICH MAY REQUIRE EXTRA SHIPPING COST.
