In-folio (mm 350x250), carte [2] (titolo in rosso e nero, dedica all'Imperatore Francesco I), pagine CXLIII + 24 tavole di figure incise in rame, compresa la tavola dell'antiporta, inc. da C. Gregorj. Cartonato coevo in custodia in mezza pelle. Bellissimo esemplare in carta grande, con barbe. Ventitrè sono le tavole che riguardano le varie parti del cavallo, raffigurate in 120 figure incise in rame, di ottima fattura. Eisemberg, ippologo e disegnatore tedesco del sec. XVIII°, fu al servizio dell'Imperatore prima, poi divenne grande scudiero del Viceré di Napoli; ebbe incarichi a Vienna ed, infine, fu nominato Direttore e primo cavallerizzo dell'Accademia di Pisa. In questo periodo scrisse quest'opera, dedicandola al Granduca di Toscana. Menessier I, 438. Graesse II, 466. Rara e bella edizione, con testo francese e italiano a fronte, di quest'opera scritta durante il soggiorno dell'autore a Pisa, presso l'Accademia. Le belle tavole illustrate (di cui il frontespizio inciso in rame da Gregori) sono finemente incise e raffigurano le varie parti anatomiche del cavallo. Il barone d'Eisemberg (?-1770 c.a), celebre maestro d'equitazione presso varie corti europee, realizzò numerosi libri sul cavallo ed a lui si deve la prima opera illustrata della letteratura equestre. Nel 1711, egli assistette all'incoronazione dell'Imperatore Carlo VI, a Francoforte, e fece il ritratto del cavallo che il sovrano montò in quell'occasione. Nel 1727 pubblicò in Inghilterra, la Manège moderne, dedicandola al re Giorgio II. Eisemberg s'ispirò soprattutto ai cavallerizzi di Newcastle, di cui fu allievo. Come ippologo, si occupò di aspetti esteriori e difetti del cavallo, che descrisse minuziosamente nelle sue opere. Book.

Il vol. costituisce un interess. manuale morfologico-funzionale del cavallo, corredato di numerose incis. in rame che illustrano i principali pregi e i più deprecabili difetti di questo animale. Vengono così descritte le caratteristiche morfologiche ben note agli estimatori del cavallo, quali "cavallo che beve in bianco", "testa zaìna", "testa di luccio", arrivando via via dai richiami di attinenza strettamente semeiologica alla descrizione e definizione dei difetti più rimarchevoli che necessariamente devono essere riconosciuti, di modo che "chi vorrà seguitare il mio sentimento scanserà facilmente i lacci, che a tutti quelli che vogliono comprar cavalli ordinariamente si tendono", così come si legge nell' "avvertimento" dell'autore a inizio d'opera. Le tavv. richiamano con ottimo tratto i particolari descritti nel testo: dai difetti della testa, del collo e dell'incollatura, della linea del dorso, si giunge a diversi tipi di groppa e alle diverse attaccature di coda, per concludere così un'ampia panoramica di tutti i difetti di appiombo, illustrati nelle diverse angolazioni. I difetti del piede e i richiami alle più comuni patologie articolari del cavallo (vesciconi, cappelletto, spavenio, .) concludono quest'opera che, per la dovizia del particolare e l'oggettiva base scientifica, appare estremamente utile e attuale per tutti gli appassionati di questo splendido animale.
