In diesem Buch wird erstmals den Seelenregungen des Individuums aufs Genaueste nachgespürt - und der Erfolg des Romans war unglaublich: Er wurde europaweit ein Seller, Freundeskreise nannten sich nach den Figuren des Romans, "Yorick-Büsten" wurden aufgestellt, fabrikmäßig Andenken mit Motiven des Buches produziert, und eine ganze Epoche der deutschen Literatur heißt nach diesem Buch: die Empfindsamkeit. Sein Autor erweist sich in der Empfindsamen Reise als Meister der Zweideutigkeit: Während in seinem Vorgängerbuch Tristram Shandy noch anarchisch die Zote polterte und das Lachen fontänengleich aus der Bauchregion platzte, tuscht Sterne in der Empfindsamen Reise mit feinstem Pinselstrich subtile Erotik und leise Ironie.
