Galician exposed shore populations of the direct developing periwinkle Littorina saxatilis are strikingly polymorphic, with an ornamented and banded upper shore form and a smooth and unbanded lower shore form. Intermediates between the two pure forms occur in a narrow mid shore zone together with the parental forms. We have previously shown that the two pure forms share the same gene pool but that mating between them is non-random. This is due to a non-random microdistribution in the zone of overlap, and also to assortative mating. In this study we present data which show that intermediate (hybrid) females mate less often than pure females in micropatches dominated by either of the pure forms, but not in micropatches in which the two pure forms are equally common. Thus, sexual fitness in intermediate females depends on the frequency of both pure morphs. Furthermore, sexual selection against intermediate females also varies with the densities of snails within each micro patch. The biological mechanisms which may explain this particular reduction of female hybrid fitness are discussed. Assortative mating between the pure morphs is sometimes almost complete, while both morphs do not mate the intermediates assortatively. In the light of this, sexual selection against intermediate females may contribute considerably to restrict gene flow between the pure forms. 6 pp., 2 tabs, 4.

Hardback. Condition: New. Alcohol is everywhere-in our everyday lives, in public debates and, increasingly, at the centre of public health policy. This book critically examines alcohol as a contemporary research and policy object. It argues that drinking is governed through heavily freighted concepts such as risk, wellbeing, gender and race. The authors interrogate dominant disciplinary sobriety and moderation frameworks, highlighting the overlooked aspects of sociability, pleasure and self-transformation. In scrutinizing the intensifying public health spotlight on alcohol, the authors issue a call to rethink what it means to live "well" in an era when health is both a personal imperative and a regulatory discourse.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This is the second of our books designed to help the professional verifier manage complexity. This time, we have responded to a growing interest not only in object-oriented programming but also in SystemVerilog. The writing of this second handbook has been just another step in an ongoing masochistic endeavor to make your professional lives as painfree as possible. The authors are not special people. We have worked in several companies, large and small, made mistakes, and generally muddled through our work. There are many people in the industry who are smarter than we are, and many coworkers who are more experienced. However, we have a strong desire to help. We have been in the lab when we bring up the chips fresh from the fab, with customers and sales breathing down our necks. We've been through software 1 bring-up and worked on drivers that had to work around bugs in production chips. What we feel makes us unique is our combined broad experience from both the software and hardware worlds. Mike has over 20 years of experience from the software world that he applies in this book to hardware verification. Robert has over 12 years of experience with hardware verification, with a focus on environments and methodology.
