Rare, short-lived high quality satirical journal written and printed in Bradford, with all 52 issues bound into a single volume. The Jackdaw was published in Bradford during 1904-1905 with the intention of poking fun at the local establishment, municipal spending, and the eccentricities of Victorian/Edwardian Bradford society - the very era that J B Priestley would satirise in his novels and plays, notably, An Inspector Calls. Surprising to this cataloguer is the quality of the writing and the numerous highly accomplished illustrations, cartoons, advertisements, social commentary, half-tone photographs and illustrated handbills mocking contemporary news stories. DESCRIPTION: Half calf over green cloth boards, titled in gilt over red panel to sturdy 6 panelled spine; a little bumped to corners and spine top, sides and tail. Just cracking over inner hinges but otherwise entirely sound with a little spine slant evident.
