Canada is the world's second-largest uranium producer and exporter, accounting for approximately 13-24% of global production, with m…ajor high-grade mining operations centered in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan. Key operating mines include Cigar Lake and McArthur River, which provide fuel for both domestic CANDU reactors and significant international exports. Almost all current Canadian uranium production comes from the Athabasca Basin in northern Saskatchewan. Mined ore is processed at mills in Saskatchewan (e.g., McClean Lake, Key Lake) and refined at the Blind River refinery in Ontario, the largest in the worldElectricity Generation: Uranium fuels 16 CANDU reactors in Ontario and one in New Brunswick, providing roughly 13-14% of Canada's electricity. Roughly 90% of Canadian produced uranium is exported, primarily to the United States and other international markets. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) regulates all mining and milling to ensure safety standards. Eldorado Resources was a Canadian mining company active between 1926 and 1988. The company was originally established by brothers Charles and Gilbert LaBine as a gold mining enterprise in 1926, but transitioned to focus on radium in the 1930s and uranium beginning in the 1940s. The company was nationalized into a Crown corporation in 1943 when the Canadian federal government purchased share control. Eldorado Resources was merged with the Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation in 1988 and the resulting entity was privatized as Cameco Corporation. The remediation of some mining sites and low-level nuclear waste continue to be overseen by the Government of Canada through Canada Eldor Inc., a subsidiary of the Canada Development Investment Corporation. Eldorado was originally established as Eldorado Gold Mines but, after finding radioactive deposits at Great Bear Lake, Northwest Territories in 1930, the company transitioned to primarily mining radioactive materials. Gilbert LaBine directed the company's development of the Eldorado Mine at Port Radium, Northwest Territories and built a state-of-the-art radium refinery in Port Hope, Ontario in 1933. In addition to radium, Eldorado also produced silver, copper, and uranium salts. Radium production halted in 1940 when World War II closed European markets for radium material. Uranium was useless until scientists realized the enormous energy potential of the uranium atom. The company reopened the mine at Port Radium in 1942 to supply the United States military with uranium products. The Government of Canada nationalized the company by purchasing share control in 1943. and in early 1944 the name was changed to Eldorado Mining and Refining Limited. In mid-1943 the District Engineer of the Manhattan Engineer District, Lt-Col Kenneth Nichols had several queries from Canada relating to contracts Canadian firms Eldorado Gold Mines and Consolidated Mining and Smelting (CMS) had for the secret atomic bomb project; CMS or Cominco was building a heavy water plant at Trail, British Columbia and Eldorado was mining and processing uranium ore. He phoned C. D. Howe in Ottawa and arranged to travel on the overnight train to Ottawa and see Howe the next day (June 14). On arriving at the address given Nichols was surprised to find that Howe was the minister of munitions and supply, and found him most friendly. Howe was told about the Manhattan Project, and Nichols was told that Eldorado was now a Crown company. The Crown corporation held a monopoly on uranium prospecting and development in Canada until 1948. Together with a discovery of the Port Radium deposits, the Eldorado company opened the Beaverlodge Mine at Uranium City, Saskatchewan. It entered production in 1953. In the 1960s the nature of sales changed when the United States military ceased purchasing of Canadian uranium ores for the purpose of atomic weapons, and from then on uranium was produced for power plants. During this period the name of the company was changed to Eldorado Nuclear Limited, with Eldorado Aviation Limited operating flights to Port Radium.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. A very attractively produced promotional work by Iraq's newly established Date Board. Paper covered boards illustrated with golden lion, date palms, and flowing Iraqi pennant, quarter bound with gold paper spine 25x32cm, card endpapers covered in golden stars. (36)pp printed on heavy card, with parall…el gilt-bordered texts in English and French, illustrated with b/w photos throughout, credited to Eldorado Photo Bagdad and Damour Paris, full-page map, and drawing. Covers good, bumped to the corners and rubbed to the edges, some marks to endpapers, interiors near fine. Undated, c1937 with a frontis portrait of King Ghazi I, and data up to 1936. The map of the Kingdom shows the date growing regions in red, extending from Fao along the Tigris and Euphrates into Kirkuk. Facing this, a sumptuous gilt and black drawing, "Iraq, Garden of Eden / L'Irak, Paradis Terrestre" shows Adam and Eve favouring a date palm over the apple tree behind. Published around the time oil became Iraq's main export, this emphasises "The Date Industry of Iraq is today one of the largest fruit enterprises in the world". It includes sections on dates and the industry highlighting growth since the War, the date palm in history, culture, gathering, packing stations old and modern, and packing for bulk and carton trades. Of around 350 different varieties identified in Iraq, only 5 are grown for export. These include the Hallawi (favoured in the US), Khadrawee and Sayers around Basrah, and the Khastawi and Zahdi around Baghdad and Kerbala. A section on nutritional value compares calorie count with other foods, and recommends increasing value by stuffing with walnut, almond or pistachio. "The date is produced in such large quantities in Iraq that it can be sold at a relatively low cost; and from the above it may be urged that the Date is by far the cheapest food value in the fruit group". A section on Government control of the industry seeks to allay concerns that packing is unhygienic. It identifies the sources of "these rumours" as soldiers serving in Iraq during the War, certain traders mainly interested in the carton trade, and people of the west concerned about cleanliness: "The Date Board wishes to take this opportunity to broadcast to foreign consumers the improvements which have taken place in all departments of the Industry in the last few years etc". A Research Station is being built in Basrah, among other things to look into ways to reduce waste. Export volumes have grown dramatically since 1906, peaking in 1935, with information about the main markets and variety preferences. A concluding statement sums up the special merits of the Iraqi date matter of factly, based on a sound and well packed standard fruit, high food value, and relative cheapness. Photos show date palms, and groves, irrigation channels, traditional transport, Ashar Creek, harvest, fumigation, packing, export, etc, along with the Date Board building. Very rare - Worldcat records only 4 locations (American University in Beirut, Lebanese American University, UN Geneva, Bibliotheque de Geneve). Not recorded on Jisc. Eldorado Photo Bagdad; Damour Paris (illustrator).

Add to basketThirteen silver-gelatin photographic prints, measuring 300 by 240mm, all with the photographer's studio stamp to the reverse; a few tiny stains and bruised corners, otherwise excellent evenly-toned prints in very good condition. All have been inserted into photo-corners and mounted on loose sheets of thin card. Housed in a sligh…tly later blue cloth portfolio. Baghdad, Eldorado Studio, A remarkably beautiful group of photographs from the Eldorado studio of Baghdad. Run by Ovaness Kouyoumdjian, Eldorado was among the most prominent Armenian-owned photographic studios in the Iraqi capital, prospering well into the 1950s. The present group of large silver-gelatin prints is a rare survival, as the studio mostly produced real photo postcards and smaller format prints. The photographs include: a potter presenting freshly-thrown earthenware jugs; mounted desert policemen; the Ctesiphon Arch (Taq Kasra); a worker gathering dates high up in a Basra palm; the golden domes and minarets of Al-Kadhimiya Mosque; two stunning images of Baghdad's famous Souk al-Safafeer; men transporting goods in a kuphar (the crates somewhat surprisingly purporting to contain scotch whisky). Cf. Vartan Melkonian, An Historical Glimpse of the Armenians in Iraq, Basra, The Times Press, 1957, p.12.
