Paperback. Condition: New. Hook, Christa (illustrator). The Indian tribes of the Pacific Northwest, both on the Coast and the inland Plateau, were the last to encounter white traders and settlers. When contact occured in the late 18th century the explorers and traders found two distinct cultures. The fairly recent adoption of the horse had opened the Plateau tribes to influences from the peoples of the Plains; but the tribes of the Coast presented a sharply different picture, involving rigid class hierarchies, an economy based on fishing and hunting marine animals, and frequent intertribal warfare which involved slave raiding and head hunting. This fascinating text describes the ways of life, in peace and war, of the coastal and inland peoples of this region.

Add to basketpaperback. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

'Preface It was a student of Professor John Fairbank who, while working on the papers of John Swire & Sons in the basement of the firm's former offices, first suggested that this extremely valuable collection should be deposited in a library to ensure its preservation and so that it would in future be more easily available to bona fide scholars. When Professor Fairbank took up the idea he wrote to Mr John Swire and myself suggesting that the SOAS Library, then just moved into its new building, might be a suitable depository. Dr Christopher Howe, the Head of the Contemporary China Institute, and I subsequently discussed the idea with Mr Swire himself and the deposit was finally agreed and the papers placed in the Library in 1975. John Swire & Sons generously agreed to provide money for the compilation and publication of a full calendar of the deposited records and we were fortunate enough to be able to secure the services of Mrs Elizabeth Hook to carry out the work. (The Library also gratefully ack- nowledges a subvention from the Publications Committee of the School of Oriental and African Studies towards the publication of this guide.) The papers may be consulted by members of the Library under the rules currently in force, but it should be noted that certain sections of the archive are closed and not available for a number of years: these are clearly indicated in Mrs Hook's guide. Persons intending to consult the archive should in the first instance read carefully the introduction to this guide and then write for permisssion to the Librarian, School of Oriental and African Studies, specifying the sections they wish to consult and for approximately how long. Photographic copies of selected sections of the archive may be made but it is not the intention at present to arrange or to permit photographic copying of major sections or the entire collection. Any scholar intending subsequently to use or quote material from the archive in a published form must first seek copyright permission from The Secretary, John Swire & Sons.' March 1977 B.C. Bloomfield Librarian.

Hardback. Condition: New. A analysis of recent German novelistic treatments of the effect of the Nazi past on the relationships between parents and children. This book focuses on representations of familial conflict in German and Austrian prose of the last twenty-five years. Some of the most prominent German and Austrian writers examine the theme of familial conflict that cannot be explained by traditional explanations: psychic hostilities, economic deprivation, or repressed experience. At the heart of these novels is the collision between the bonds of family and the events that form the decisive turning points of our age: National Socialism, the Second World War, and the Holocaust. Snyder Hook examines five novels in detail: Christa Wolf's Kindheitsmuster, Thomas Bernhard's Auslöschung, Peter Schneider's Vati, Elfriede Jelinek's Die Ausgesperrten, and Elisabeth Reichart's Februarschatten. Central to the discussions of each novel are questions of guilt, cultural identity, and atonement, and of the relocation of these ultimately unresolvable issues from the larger national and political arena to the realm of intimate relationships between parents and children.Elizabeth Snyder Hook is professor of German at the University of North Carolina-Asheville.
