Der Jurist und Sprachwissenschaftler Zaccaria Pallioppi (1820 - 1873) begründete 1857 eine erste allgemein anerkannte Orthografie des Oberengadinischen und sicherte diesem Idiom auf diese Weise als Schriftsprache einen Vorrang vor anderen rätoromanischen Sprachen. Das wesentlich umfangreichere Projekt eines Wörterbuches konnte er nur noch in den Anfängen realisieren. Das Vorhaben wurde schließlich von Zaccarias Sohn, dem Pfarrer Emil Zaccarini, vollendet, der 1895 zunächst die romanisch-deutsche Variante herausgab; 1902 folgte die deutsch-romanische Ausgabe. Das Wörterbuch darf als Schlüsselwerk rätoromanischer Sprachkultur gelte. Vollständige Exemplare sind heute äußerst selten.
