Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First Edition. First UK Edition in dustwrapper. Octavo. 253 pp. Illustrated with vignette wood engravings by British painter, designer, book illustrator and wood-engraver Eric Ravilious. Publisher's dark-pink boards lettered in cream to the spine and front board. Boards a little mottled but the cream let…tering bright, clear and un-faded. There is a former owner's neat name in ink and date (1943) to the front free end-paper. No spine fade. Overall a VG+ copy. The VG dustwrapper (repeating the Ravilious illustration for October) is priced 7s 6d net to the inside flap (as called for) and is pretty much complete but with some staining to the right-hand edge edge of the front panel, the top-edge of the rear panel and also to the spine which is quite browned. Arranged in calendar form with each month illustrated with a wood engraving by Ravilious, as is the title page with some extra sections on 'A Few River Fish', 'Herbs in the Kitchen' and 'A Calendar of Home-Grown Vegetables'. A blissful little cookbook but it is s the illustrations by Eric Ravilious that set this apart. Further photographs available upon request.

Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First edition. The first edition of a very respected cookery book aimed for the country housewife, one of the last published before rationing, written by prominent food writer Ambrose Heath. The first edition of The Country Life Cookery Book, a very popular and one of the… most respected cookery books of twentieth century Britain, written by prolific food writer Ambrose Heath. Published by Country Life in 1937.In the publisher's original red cloth, in the original pink unclipped dust wrapper. A signed inscription from a Shackleton to the front free end paper, possibly Edward Shackleton.Recognising the present difficulties of country housewives wishing to prepare delicious meals without having the luxury of easy access to markets, Heath's recipes are inexpensive and rather easy to prepare, while still retaining many great flavours. In this book, Heath offers readers the very best of his food writing, with delicious and lesser-known recipes such as prawn pancakes and custard marrows, as well as his usual engaging writing style.Set out as recipes for each month of the year, Heath also offers gardening hints at the beginning of each chapter for growing particular ingredients attached to recipes. Two years before the beginning of World War Two, the recipes offer many delicious flavours unlikely to be seen during rationing only a couple years later. In the publisher's original red cloth, in the original pink unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, smart, with a couple of faint marks to boards. Minor fading to the extremities and to the spine, marginal rubbing to tails of joints, and slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities. Pink dust wrapper is generally bright and clean, with fading and signs of browning and spot the the extremities. Heavier browning and fading to spine. Slight edgewear, with chips to the head and tail of the spine, and a couple to the top edge of rear wrapper. Flyleaves intact. End papers are generally bright and clean, with slightly browning and the small odd spot, mostly to the hinges. Large white sticker on front free end paper covering inscription. Internally, firmly bound, with minor wear to hinge between leaves pp.144-145. Pages are bright and clean, with slight age toning to the extremities. Very Good. Eric Ravilious (illustrator). book.
