    Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Published in 1981 in a limited edition of 170 copies. 8vo. pp. 14, [ii]. Unbound proof copy and various material relating to the publication of the book contained in a plastic file cover. Galley proofs mostly with corrections, two dated 17.12.80., and two dated 9.1.81. with a photocopy of the introduction with corrections. Two A4 typed copies of the text 5pp., recto only with corrections and one A4 typed copy of an earlier rough version of the introduction 2pp., recto only. Small mock up of first eight pages with handwritten notes as to what will appear on each page. Initials of Joan Stevens on some of the contents and some of the corrections in her hand. A previously unpublished essay by Jefferies on streamside observations and a poacher taking a pike. The Daedalus Press was based at Stoke Ferry, Norfolk. Joan Stevens the feminist bookseller and expert on John Cowper Powys and Edward Thomas died in 2015. Richard Jefferies (1848 Ğ 1887) was a major writer about rural life and nature. George Miller was Jefferies' biographer and with Hugoe Matthews edited an authoritative bibliographical study. Very good.

Handwritten letter initialled 'E & K' [Eric & Kate] loosely inserted written on headed and illustrated notepaper from Dove Cottage 26 Wordsworth Walk Hampstead Garden Suburb London NW11 6AU dated 18/10/96 and consisting of about 90 words in which he encloses the book and 'a fly leaf for fun' [also present]. He says the book has been published by Adrian Bell a small publishing company in Norwich. There will be publicity in Norfolk and it will be sold at Jarrolds, 'but whether it ever escapes the beet fields is another matter.' Handwritten letter initialled 'E & K' [Eric & Kate] loosely inserted written on identical notepaper and addressed as above dated 23/1/97 and consisting of about 87 words in which he says he has been interviewed for H & H [Ham & Highgate Express] by Ruth Gorb. 'The article is generous & gets the spirit of it & me. The photo was less than flattering so a cover up job has been cleverly carried out!' Handwritten signed letter from Eric Austen to 'Country Cousin' [Joan Stevens] loosely inserted addressed from Dove Cottage etc. dated 6-12-94 and consisting of about 375 words about his health and the copies he has 'run off of a Country Child'. He encloses a copy of a letter from Whittet Books Limited rejecting the book 'I'm not bothered really. I wrote it for love & enjoyed doing it.' He asks for a few criticisms and says 'my main aim was honesty, no embroidery of facts or made up conversations - (as in Cider with Rosie) it has authenticity - at least etc .' Typescript (photostat) of 'Three Hundred from the Life Books' dated 1994. No. 16 of 20 (see accompanying letter). A4. pp. [26]., recto only. Handwritten signed letter from Eric (& Kate) to Joan Stevens loosely inserted written on headed notepaper from Dove Cottage etc, undated in which he says 'Herewith the 300 - The ultimate gift which only about 20 people in the world will get on the end of as I only photostatted 20. Limited edition, No. 199 of 300 copies. 8vo. pp. [136]. Paperback. Signed by the author. Presentation copy: 'For Joan Ğ Christmas reading with love from Eric & Kate.' Two handwritten signed letters from Eric Austen to Joan Stevens loosely inserted written on headed notepaper on one side from 14 Highgate Avenue London N6 5SB dated 21 August 90 and 11 Sept 90 concerning the 40 'Life Books' Exhibition held at Friends House 6th-18th Sept 90, these are accompanied by two guides to the exhibition. A newspaper article about Austen who was responsible for creating the ceramic CND symbol loosely inserted. Also enclosed three Christmas cards, a change of address card and a handwritten signed thank you card from Kate Austen, and photocopies of newspaper articles. Eric Austen (1922 Ğ 1999) was a designer and teacher who became Senior Lecturer at Goldsmiths. His 1981 exhibition of 40 giant 'Life Books' which held more than 2000 quotations taken from literature and philosophy was revived in 1990 at Friends House in London. Joan Stevens the feminist bookseller and expert on John Cowper Powys and Edward Thomas died in 2015. Very good. 1874739072 Very good. Signedes.

Loosely inserted postcard addressed from 37 Langton Way, London S.E.3. from Fuller to Eric and Joan Stevens, 2 Prospect Road, N.W.2. requesting the Ackerley book 'Prisoners of War from their catalogue. Two Eric and Joan Stevens invoices loosely inserted dated 9.2.77 and 21.11.83. with notes from Fuller. One says 'Many thanks to you - I am not a collector but am delighted to have these, books of old friends never before possessed. Quite touched this morning, opening them.! RF.' The other says he is glad to have 'the nice items.' Also included a typed envelope addressed to Fuller at the above address and a typed signed letter from Tony [Curtis?] at the Financial Times dated 16 March, 1976 and consisting of about 40 words saying he is glad Fuller will do the Julian Grenfell piece, 'about 650 words by March 29th', this and further sheets of paper, one folding, include copious notes in Fuller's hand, mostly in pencil some of which concern Julian Grenfell and John Bayley. Other newspaper cuttings loosely inserted relating to Roy Fuller, including reviews and obituaries loosely inserted. Roy Fuller (1912 Ğ 1991) poet and novelist, was solicitor for the Woolwich Equitable Building Society and the prestigious Professor of Poetry chair at Oxford.
