Meschendörfer für vierstimmigen Chor bekannt. Als Musiklehrer und Chorleiter prägte er Generationen von Gymnasialschülern in Schäßburg, Mediasch, Mühlbach und Hermannstadt. In ihren Erinnerungen schreibt Brigitte Niedermaier: Der Irtel, unser Musiklehrer, hat mir durch seinen Unterricht viel gegeben. Wir sangen begeistert im Chor Brahms, Hugo Distler und die von ihm komponierte 'Siebenbürgische Elegie '. Er sang uns im Unterricht die 'Winterreise ' und die 'Schöne Müllerin' vor. Wir bekamen von ihm Einführungen in die Matthäuspassion und in die h-Moll-Messe, als diese Werke in der Stadtpfarrkirche aufgeführt werden sollten. Außerhalb des Unterrichts bot er Komponistenstunden an, wo er uns mit Hilfe von Schallplatten die Werke von Beethoven und Schubert nahebrachte. Sechs kurze Orgelstücke, datiert 1985 und 1986, werden hier erstmals im Druck veröffentlicht. Die Manuskripte wurden mit Bleistift geschrieben, weil der Autor, wie er selbst erzählte, nach quälenden Verhören durch die Securitate nicht mehr mit Tinte schreiben konnte. Um sie vor dem Verlöschen zu retten, aber auch um die Stücke in der Musikpraxis lebendig zu halten, seien sie hiermit der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt. Irtel hat die sechs Miniaturen als 'Weihnachtsmusik ' zu einem Zyklus zusammengefasst. Es ging ihm in allen diesen Stücken weniger um das Liturgische als vielmehr um das Atmosphärische. Mit einem untrüglichen Gespür für Texte ließ er sich von einem Gedicht (Hans Carossa: Der alte Brunnen), einer Choralstrophe (Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme), einem geistlichen Volkslied (Maria durch ein Dornwald ging) und einem Weihnachtslied (Erfreue dich, Himmel) zu kleinen Stimmungsbildern inspirieren. Die zwei Praeludien in fis und in cis entstanden ohne textliche Vorlage. Irtels Tonsprache ist traditionell, mit modalen Elementen, angereichert durch einige ausdrucksvolle Dissonanzen. Die Stücke sind mit ihren zahlreichen Anmerkungen zur Interpretation eine reizvolle Aufgabe für Organisten. Trotz ihrer Kleingliedrigkeit erfordern sie eine farbenreiche Orgel, die dynamisch vielfach abgestuft sein sollte. Hierbei wird auch deutlich, dass Irtel ein sensibler Klavierspieler war, der seine musikalischen Intentionen auf die Orgel übertragen hat. Beim Anhören seiner Werke auf der Sauer- Orgel der Evangelischen Stadtpfarrkirche in Hermannstadt, einige Jahre vor der Wende 1989, verlangte Irtel freies, ungebundenes Spiel und die Umsetzung aller dynamischen Angaben. Auf der Doppel-CD Orgellandschaft Siebenbürgen, erschienen 1992 bei Dabringhaus und Grimm in Detmold, werden drei der Miniaturen an der Heltauer Wegenstein- Orgel von der Verfasserin dieser Zeilen gespielt.
