His works, with which he explores the boundaries between sculpture, object and performance, are of great visual power, easily accessible and at the same time raise existential questions. Often they invite the viewer to participate or are a document of this interactive aspect. Central topics for him are questions about the constitution of reality and identity: To understand people as self-determined individuals is a fiction for Wurm. The central component of the volume will be Wurms Narrow House, which was shown at the 2011 Venice Art Biennale. Wurm built his parents' house true to detail - but narrowed to a width of just over a meter - and thus symbolizes the (small) bourgeoisie and the narrow-mindedness of a typical single-family home. Visitors can experience the narrowness of the province as they can squeeze through the house. "59 Positions" is a 20-minute video, filmed in 1992 using a stationary camera in an empty, unadorned room with a concrete floor, consisting of fragments of actions each lasting just a few seconds, in which we glimpse the artist Erwin Wurm and his friends bundled up in sweaters, pants and shi…rts, seemingly oblivious to the usual purposes of these articles of clothing. Their bodies are contorted into ridiculous poses, under the influence of a strange choreography made up of motionless objects that tremble almost imperceptibly. Wurm thus aims to explore whether a physical action can become a sculpture and if so, at what point the transition takes place. By making use of looped sequences without movement, his aim was to find out if and when this transformation might happen. Wurm was so impressed by the visual force and immediacy of these curious anthropomorphic forms that he decided to create a series of colour photographs based on this video, thus reconnecting with this medium in which he had often worked in the 1980s. After "Self-Portrait as 47 Pickles", "59 Positions" is the second title in the series of artists books by Erwin Wurm published by RVB Books. Hardcover. Condition: New. With each new work, Austrian artist Erwin Wurm (born 1954) seems to find the simplest, funniest ways to reinvent sculpture from scratch. In 2010, he charmed audiences worldwide with his 'Narrow House,' which was exhibited at the Venice Biennale (where it was comically sited on a canal, next to one of t…he city's massive palazzos), the Kunstraum Dornbirn and other international venues. A sculpture of a classic detached Austrian house with a gabled roof, loosely based on Wurm's family home, 'Narrow House' took visitors back in time to 1960s Austria. Naturally, Wurm added his own sculptural touch, and squeezed the whole house to a total width of just over three feet. Its fixtures and appliances--from the plumbing to the cutlery and the telephone--were all carefully modeled on 1960s design, and were likewise compressed, to a degree that visitors were just able to squeeze themselves in and pass through the structure. This volume documents this wonderful work and its installation with photographs and critical commentary, and also includes an interview with the artist.
