"Written with vigour and in accurate detail, [the book] affords an account, at once enlightening and provocative, of public and preparatory school life. The authors make a sweeping attack on the basis of personal experience, but they are sentimentalists no more of the 'isn't fagging wicked?' than of the 'Old School Tie' variety . . . Giles Romilly is eighteen, and Esmond sixteen, years old" (publisher's blurb). It begins: "The first days of going to school are always memorable; every detail of preparation, departure, arrival, stands out clearly in the mind for years afterwards. I can remember no day so vividly as that on which I first went to Seacliffe School, Seaford, unless perhaps the first day at Wellington College, Berkshire. I can remember what kind of day it was - warm and stuffy, like the inside of a taxicab - and what time I got up in the morning, and what I had for lunch." Aged 18, Esmond married Jessica Mitford.

Add to basketFirst edition, first printing of a cornerstone text for historians of the Spanish Civil War. Publisher's original grey cloth with red titles to the spine, in the Abbey illustrated dustwrapper. A very good or better copy, the binding firm and the cloth bright and fresh, the spine gently rolled. The contents, lightly spotted to the prelims and closed text block edge, are otherwise clean throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. Complete with the lightly rubbed and nicked dustwrapper that remains without loss, with some toning to the rear panel and flap edges, and minor fading to the spine. Not price-clipped (7s 6d net to the lower front flap). Esmond Romilly (10 June 1918 30 November 1941) was a British socialist, anti-fascist, and journalist, who as a teenage runaway from Wellington College was among the first British volunteers to join the International Brigades in Spain (cycling across France to fight on the side of the democratically elected Spanish Republic against Franco's insurrection). He saw intensive front line action in defence of Madrid, culminating in the battle of Boadilla del Monte in December 1936. After falling ill in January 1937, the nineteen year old nephew of Clementine Churchill returned to England and whilst convalescing at the home of his distant cousin Dorothy Allhusen he met Jessica Mitford. Second youngest of seven, Jessica was burdened with two Fascists for older sisters. Diana and Unity were both friends of Hitler, and the former married Oswald Mosley. Jessica, on the other hand, was a Communist much to the chagrin of her wealthy family. She and Esmond quickly fell in love and eloped to Bayonne on the French-Spanish border, where they were married. The couple hoped to return to Spain to report on the war but were thwarted by their failure to obtain a visa. During their honeymoon, Esmond worked on his eyewitness account of fighting with the English brigades, securing a publisher's advance of £50 and resulting in the Autumn 1937 publication of 'Boadilla'. Initial sales were poor which might go some way to explaining why first editions are rare in commerce. It served as a primary historical source for many leading scholars writing about the Spanish Civil War, including Paul Preston, Hugh Thomas and Anthony Beevor. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

Add to basketFIRST EDITION, frontispiece photograph of the authors, some light foxing, pp. 310, crown 8vo, original blue cloth, backstrip lettered in silver and lightly sunned through the jacket, lean to spine, spots to edges, dustjacket with cancel flaps (as issued), design to front and backstrip panels by J.L. Carstairs, a little chipped and nicked at extremities with some light soiling and a few spots to rear panel, very good. An account of a firebrand adolescence, written whilst both authors were still in their teens, detailing their battle with the public school system - as represented in their case by Wellington College, 'where they became allies in a rebellion against the militaristic and conservative values' (ODNB). Experiencing an awakening to left-wing politics quite at odds with the upbringing and education, they set about a programme of activism that included inserting pacifist leaflets inside the hymn-books at the school's Armistice Day service, and launching a magazine with the same title as the present account - the furore provoked by which (the Daily Mail alerted its readers to the 'Red Menace in Public Schools') led to Esmond absconding, before a brief return to the education system at the co-educational Bedales, following which they launched their literary careers with this 'precocious and unexpectedly even-tempered' work (ODNB). Both brothers continued their communist activity by joining the International Brigades to fight against Franco in the Spanish Civil War, with Esmond there marrying Jessica Mitford - a cause for further controversy. During the Second World War, Giles, working as a war correspondent in Scandinavia, was imprisoned at Colditz; Esmond, meanwhile, had also worked as a journalist, in the US, but returned to England and disappeared whilst on service as a navigator on a flight destined for a raid on Hamburg.

Add to basketPrinted wrappers, the first three issues stapled. Staples rusted, second issue slightly stained at head of upper wrapper, third and fourth issues foxed at edges, else a very good set. A magazine by and for schoolchildren, largely edited by two nephews of Winston Churchill, who were at Wellington College. The upper wrapper of the first issue announces itself as 'Against Reaction in the Public Schools', the second as the 'Public Schools' Journal against Fascism, Militarism and Reaction', and the last two as 'The Progressive Journal of the Public Schools'. Aside from politics, sex inevitably was a recurrent subject, with much reassurance about the normality of masturbation. Most of the contributions were published anonymously but amongst other notable contents are five early poems by Gavin Ewart. Both brothers would shortly fight in the International Brigades, in the Spanish Civil War, despite their mother persuading Churchill to use his influence to prevent her less hardy son, Giles, from seeing active service. In response, Giles deserted in order to receive the consequential punishment of being sent to the front. Esmond is perhaps best remembered for his 1937 marriage to Jessica Mitford, in the face of parental opposition on a grand scale, involving Sir Anthony Eden, then foreign secretary, and a British naval destroyer, but the eventual union was brief. Aged 23, Esmond died en route to an air raid on Hamburg, in November 1941. A thousand copies of the first issue of 'Out of Bounds' were printed, with 850 sold in twenty-three public schools, but the next issue had a print-run of three thousand copies. Nevertheless, 'Out of Bounds' is now a rare periodical, both commercially and institutionally, particularly in the form of a full set. According to LibraryHub, the BL has a set, and the Bodleian a copy of the second and third issues. Worldcat adds a set at Emory, and a copy of the first issue at the National Library of Australia.
