1684, large colour manuscript plan of the outlying properties outside the city walls. Each parcel of land numbered, with a key to ownership. 95cm x 60cm, folded with some tears on the folds. Vauban constructed distinctive fortifications to the town in the latter half of the 17th Century and these can be seen in the Ferraris Map of the Austrian Netherlands [1770 - 78]. There is no sign of these fortifications here, merely the earlier surrounding city wall. There is a listing of landowners with map references as well as an outline border marked on the map. We suggest that this could be a survey to identify landowners prior to the requisition of land in order to construct Vauban's series of star shaped and zigzag fortifications, and may be one of the few records in existence of this earlier shape and ownership of the surrounding district. An attractive and important map, and very rare. Folded with some tears on the folds.
