Top quarter of the spine is torn, and library catalog number pasted to lower spine. Rear board is loose and nearly separated from spine. Some shelf wear, spotting, and bubbles in the cloth. Congregational Library of Boston, Massachusetts affixed to verso pastedown, embossed library stamps in interior. Dark blue glazed pastedowns. Frontispiece depicting Lord Fairfax engraved by C. H. Jeens, fron the painting by Robert Walker. Interior pages are in good condition, clean and bright, substantial paper weight, slightly brittle edges. The book covers the life, and primarily the miliary campaigns of Thomas Fairfax, the 3rd Lord Fairfax of Cameron (1612-1671), a peer who fought in the English Civil War on the side of the Parliamentarians. There are seven maps of the military campaigns, and five illustrations from woodcuts embedded in the text. Markham was also the author of The History of the Abyssynian Expedition. Hardcover.
