A letter to the US Congress inspired by 'a unanimous vote of a mass meeting of the citizens of San Francisco. held on May 25th, 1894,' protesting the refinancing of the Central Pacific Railroad's debt. The Central Pacific was built and owned by Leland Stanford, Collis Huntington, Charles Crocker, and Mark Hopkins. This pamphlet alleges that these capitalists had looted the company and by refinancing, sought to put off payment of $77 million owed to the US government. The controversy resulted in a great many pamphlets in the mid-1890s. Cowan and Cowan, Bibliography of the History of California, p. 508, giving the date (erroneously) as 1897.
