Printed wrappers, 8vo, 22 cm, 51, [1] pp, 32 black-and-white plates. 120 entries. From the introduction - "The hundred and twenty illuminated manuscripts in this exhibition have been chosen both as the finest examples of medieval book decoration in the Museum's collections, and to show certain aspects of the development of this art from the tenth to the fifteenth century, with a few later examples. The exhibition is being held as part of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the death of Richard, 7th Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion, the founder of the Fitzwilliam Museum. His bequest to the University of Cambridge included his collections of paintings, and of prints, and the whole of his library, containing printed books, autograph music, and 130 medieval manuscripts. His interest in illuminated manuscripts was apparently at its height between the years 1789 and 1815 when all these were acquired, the greater part during the last seven years of his life. Fortunately the dates of acquisition are easily ascertainable because it was his practice to write his name and the year in which die book was acquired at the top right comer of die first page of every volume. Nearly all the manuscripts collected by Lord Fitzwilliam were illuminated, and the majority were service-books, ninety-seven of these being Books of Hours. The standard of the illumination varies greatly, but the collection contains about twenty-five books of high quality. Twenty-two of these are included in the present exhibition." Very Good.

This book is concerned to describe how it came into existence and what was accomplished in the early centuries of its development, as far as these matters can be decided by the best modern scholarship. At the same time the book endeavours to be fully readable and requires no existing specialist knowledge. Although the general plan of the work is historical, there are few aspects of library economy before 1700 that are not discussed. Twenty-three photographic illustrations accompany the text." Contents: The monastic library; The bibliography of the manuscript book; The universities and the mediaeval library; The contents of the mediaeval library; The private collector and the revival of Greek learning. Contents: The preservation of the classics; The dispersal of the libraries in the sixteenth century; The Elizabethan society of antiquaries and the formation of the Cottonian library; The libraries of Cambridge, 1570-1700. Contents: Oxford libraries in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Name on front free endpaper, endpapers mildly foxed, a few light pencil marks and notes to text, Good in a chipped and spotted dustwrapper.
