Bound in marbled paper covers with paper label to lower spine. Internally clean, no illustrations, contents complete, 120pp., measures 13.5cm. x 21cm. The text is entirely in French. A report on the fortifications of the Fortress of Ehrenbreitstein prior to the French siege of 1798, written by the French Commander in the same year. In 1794, French revolutionary troops conquered Koblenz; in the following years they besieged Ehrenbreitstein three times without success. But a one-year siege, starting in 1798 during the War of the Second Coalition, brought starvation to the defenders of Ehrenbreitstein who finally handed over the fortress to French troops in 1799. By the Treaty of Lunéville, the French were eventually forced to withdraw from the right bank of the Rhine. Hence, they blew up Ehrenbreitstein in 1801 to prevent the enemy from taking hold of a fully functional fortress just a few metres away from French territory on the left bank of the Rhine. Construction of the new fortress took from 1817 to 1828, and it was ready for service by 1834.
