Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good. John Faed (illustrator). Third Edition. 1935. Third edition. 23 pp., a frontispiece by Jackson Simpson and a vignette on the title-page and 10 full-page illustrations by John Faed. George Davidson (c1806-1872) was known as "the literary bookseller" of Aberdeen. He was distinguished for his extensive and accurate knowledge of literature, and his brilliant powers of conversation. He contributed to various periodicals, and his "The Legend of St. Swithin" originally appeared as a broadsheet. A second edition with John Faed's illustrations was issued in 1861, and reprinted in 1864 and 1889. The work is an amusing Scottish version of the Legend in which St Swithin which differs from the popular traditions of the Saint, both as respects the incidents narrated and the locality assigned to them, and St Swithin has been translated from the Cathedral City of Winchester to a temporary retreat at the Roman Catholic Seminary at Blairs about 5 miles from Aberdeen on the banks of the River Dee. In this third edition the frontispiece by John Faed has been replaced by a more appropriate work by Jackson Simpson, and two verses of the Moral have not been reproduced. The book is bound in the red paper covered boards with a black cloth spine and black titling on the spine. The book has fairly recently been rebacked and recased in the original boards, and as a result is now tight and secure. The case of the book has shelf wear with light soiling on the boards and a crease running down the paper covering the front board. The cloth on the spine is worn with about 1/8" missing from both ends. The contents are tight and clean with a very gentle crease running down the half-title page and frontispiece. There is no inscription.

Add to basket3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on lightly-aged paper, but with a corner of the first leaf torn away, resulting in some loss of text, including the year. The reverse of the second leaf laid down on a leaf removed from an album. The image of the 'design', 8 x 6.5 cm, is on the second leaf, which also carries Tayler's signature. It is a crude but pleasing sketch of an intended painting, done with the sureness of a watercolour artist. Tayler begins the letter by writing that he hopes that he is not trespassing far on your goodnature' by asking if Faed can 'help me to a Cottage Door. I am painting a Girl carrying a Basket of Puppies, the anxious Mother following, it is on a large scale for Water Colour, and I have nothing sufficiently real to work upon.' He adds: 'I dwell still th grateful recollection on ne or two Cottage Interiors you lent me many years ago'. He had wished that Faed had 'made some use of me in return in the Horse or Dog or Animal line'. Beneath the sketch Tayler writes: 'This is my design. If you should have anything of a Doorway you could lend me send me a line and I will send a messenger for it at your own time.' From an album of letters received by Thomas Faed.
Condition: very good. Sandusky, Ohio: Cosmopolitan Art Association,1860. 22 1/8" x 27 3/4". Mezzotint engraving by James Faed.Published exclusively for the Members of the Cosmopolitan Art Association. For the Sixth Year 1859-60. Very good condition. A skillful group portrait of England's distinguished 16th-century literati. Shakespeare is seated prominently in the center casually surrounded by his notable brethren, including Francis Bacon, Ben Johnson, Francis Beaumont, and John Fletcher. Some of these illustrious men stand huddled in conversation, some sit informally, but all are recognizable as portraits, and all are carefully identified by a key beneath the image. The talent of the two Faed brothers comes through in the way they provide visual information about the histories of some of these men.
