Und doch wurde er Teil des Jetsets, damals, als man noch Jetset sagte. Tanzte im Studio 54, begleitete die Rolling Stones auf Tour, traf sich mit Leuten, die nunmehr in Geschichtsbüchern stehen: Jackie Onassis, Truman Capote, Andy Warhol. Das ist der eine Strang. Der andere Strang führte ihn früh weg aus New York. Als 17-Jähriger reiste er zum ersten Mal nach Südafrika. Er war inspiriert von "Out of Africa", einem Roman der dänischen Schriftstellerin Karen Blixen. Im kenianischen Tsavo-Nationalpark fing er mit seiner Kamera heimlich das Massensterben der Elefanten ein. "The End of the Game", der Band mit den toten Elefanten, machte Beard berühmt.
