Samuel Fallours was working for the Dutch East India Company in the early 1700s on the island of Ambon (part of present day Indonesia) as a clergyman's assistant. Having an artistic talent, he made drawings of local fish, crustaceans, and other marine organisms from the Indian Ocean. The illustrations he drew, so vivid and bright, even surrealistic, are considered to be among the finest natural history illustrations ever made. Though some of the fauna are certainly fantastic and embellished with imaginary features (suns, moons, stars, heads with hats) most of the drawings are valued as still having scientific merit. His drawings were copied many times and show up, sometimes unattributed to Fallours, in other ichthyological and natural history publications and manuscripts of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Samuel Fallours iniziò come soldato semplice a servizio della compagnia orientale delle Indie ma in seguito fra il 1706 e il 1712 ne divenne il curato. Fu così che intorno al 1703 molti importanti ufficiali scoprirono le sue qualità di artista. Diventando sempre più popolare Fallours iniziò a fare decine di copie dei suoi lavori. Rientrando a casa iniziò a vendere queste copie o a regalarle come omaggio a importanti personalità. Inoltre si mise anche a copiare i disegni di altri illustratori, per esempio quelli di Johannes Lamotius. Questo lavoro fu così raccolto in una serie di portfolio e cartelle con illustrazioni di animali, sopratutto pesci, ma anche crostacei, insetti e persino sirene. Molte di queste illustrazioni furono anche inserite nelle pubblicazioni scientifiche dell'epoca: Poissons, Ecrivisses et Crabes di Louis Renard, Verhandeling der Ongemeene Visschen van Amboina di Francois Valentijn.
