Hardcover. Condition: As New. No Dust Jacket. Latin and English on facing pages. From the Brill series 'Selected Works of J. L. Vives' volume 8. This treatise is a sequel to Vives' On the Education of the Christian Woman. It studies the institution of marriage from a male vantage point, with interesting observations on female ps…ychology, anticipating his later work, De anima. Vives insists more here on the weakness and instability of the woman than in the previous treatise, relying on the biological tenets of Aristotle and Galen. Much attention is given to the choice of a wife and to the husband's role as tutor of his spouse and disciplinarian. The marriage debt is regarded as a necessary evil, as in St. Paul, while the spirituality of the union is exalted. The book was often printed together with the De institutione feminae Christianae and even considered as a fourth book of that work. ; tall 8vo 9" - 10" tall; 246 pp.

Add to basketEstratto. Condition: Gut. pp. 173-187. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to W. Haase. - Minimally bumped, else very good and clean. - From the text: In the domain of classical studies, in the English-speak…ing world at least, the title of W.F. Jackson Knights book, Roman Vergil, has come to symbolize the sublime, vatic utterance of the most famous singer of Romes greatness. No one would wish to deny this higher calling to the poet of the Aeneid. Servius says somewhere that all of Virgil is full of wisdom. The same cannot be truly said of Ovid, as he would be the first to acknowledge. His verse does not possess the emotional force, the ethereal Stimmung of his glorious predecessor. One would not call him Roman in the sense of official, imperial, august and Augustan Rome. Yet there is a sense in which Ovid shows a true attachment to Rome, to its ancient religious traditions and beliefs, and a sympathy for those simple folk who unfeignedly manifested their devotion to the gods . We must strip away the mask of this sophisticated poseur, discover the underlying tone of his words. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: In a sort of envoi to his pipe, A la sampogna…, which he added to his last revision of the Arcadia, the poet Sannazaro bids farewell to his sylvan Muse. It is a very desolate scene: Le nostre Muse sono estinte; secchi sono i nostri lauri; minato è il nostro Parnaso; le selve son tutte mutole; le valle e i monti per doglia son divenuti sordi. - He had earlier made some vague vaticinations about a new direction in his poetry in an elegy to his beloved Cassandra Marchese: Mox maiora vocant me numina scilicet alti Incessele animum sacra verenda Dei (Elegiae, III, 2, 45-46), - and adumbrates the theme of the work: Nuncius aetheriis ut venerit aliger astris Dona ferens castae Virginis in gremium (vv. 49-50). - Instrumental in converting the poet to a celebration of divine subjects was the famous preacher and mystic, Giles of Viterbo. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to W. Haase. - Author Fantazzi's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: The certamen mag…num between Corydon and Thyrsis has often been neglected in deference to the more engagé compositions of the Eclogues, such as 1, 4, 6, and 10. For some, however, it is a very important piece, central to the understanding of Virgils pastoral poetry. Ettore Paratore, the eminent cattedratico of Latin literature at the University of Rome, considers the poem to be the acid test for the comprehension of the Bucolics: la capacità di comprendere e gustare lecloga VII è il banco di prova per un vero intenditore della poesia delle Bucoliche. North of the Alps another authoritative connoisseur of Augustan poetry, Viktor Pöschl of Heidelberg, paired the First and the Seventh Eclogues, ein ernstes und ein heiteres Gedicht, as essential readings for the understanding of the Eclogues. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Xxiv, 503 pp. Table of correspondents; works cited, short-title forms; index, coinages of Henry VIIIC. Map, b/w illustrations. Large octavo. Cream dust jacket with bronze medallion has minor shelf wear. Book itself is clean, tight and unmarked. A v…ery nice copy. Covers ".Erasmus' controversies with a variety of critics and opponents. The publication in March of the dialogue Ciceronianus, for example, provoked a huge uproar in France because it included an ironic jest that was considered insulting to the great French humanist Guillaume Bude. More serious were the continuing efforts of conservative Catholics in France (Noël Béda) , Italy (Alberto Pio) , and Spain (members of the religious orders) to prove not only that Erasmus was a secret Lutheran but also that humanist scholarship was the source of the Lutheran heresy. In response to these charges Erasmus wrote letters and books in which he vigorously defended his orthodoxy and assiduously cultivated the support of his many admirers among the princes and prelates of Europe. The letters also record Erasmus' growing anxiety over the progress of the Reformation in Basel, which would cause him to leave the city in 1529; his diligent attention to his financial affairs, which had improved in recent years thanks to the assistance of the Antwerp banker, Erasmus Schets"; Collected Works of Erasmus; Vol. 14; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 503 pages.
