Light marks to the wraps, including a small tide mark to the rear wrap. A little loss to the back strip. Ink to the rear wrap. Stamp to the reverse of the rear wrap. Tidemark to the reverse of the front wrap. Glassine wrap with some loss to the bacsktrip. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally celan with some spots, and a faint tide mark to some pages. Good. book.

Longue et belle préface de Théodore de Banville, sous forme de lettre à Poulet-Malassis. "Banville évoque (?) la folle équipée de Fauchery et Nadar (dont les passeports indiquaient Faucheriski et Nadarski) pour libérer la Pologne en 1848 (?) Pendant son séjour en Australie, Fauchery avait envoyé des lettres au Moniteur où elles parurent au cours de l'année 1856. C'est un reportage d'une grande authenticité sur la vie des pionniers et des chercheurs d'or, rédigé non pas par un quelconque journaliste observateur, mais par un homme d'action doublé d'un artiste talentueux" [Oberlé]. Après son aventure australienne, Fauchery se rendit en Chine où il contracta une maladie infectieuse. Il mourut à Yokohama en 1861, à l'âge de 37 ans. Personnage singulier, il avait appartenu à la bohème parisienne si bien croquée par Murger et Delvau. Ami de jeunesse de Baudelaire (il lui dédicacera un exemplaire de ces "Lettres"), Fauchery fréquenta Banville, Champfleury, Monselet?.
