März 1964 in Berlin) war ein deutscher Schriftsteller und Journalist. Feder gehörte in der Weimarer Republik zu einem Kreis linksbürgerlicher Journalisten und war zwischen 1919 und 1931 Ressortleiter für Innenpolitik beim Berliner Tageblatt ("Spectator"). Er war auch Mitglied der Deutschen Demokratischen Partei (DDP), einer jener demokratischen Parteien, die durch die politischen Radikalisierung spätestens ab 1930 in der Bedeutungslosigkeit versunken sind. Als eine Verhaftung Feders drohte, floh er über die Schweiz nach Paris, das unmittelbar nach der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten zum Zentrum der linksbürgerlichen Publizistik und Exilpolitik wurde. Feder nahm maßgebend an der Schaffung der wohl bekanntesten Exilzeitung, des Pariser Tageblattes teil. Als die deutschen Truppen in Frankreich einmarschierten, versuchte Feder, der jüdischer Herkunft war, ein Visum für die Vereinigten Staaten zu bekommen. Als der Antrag unter Hinweis auf die enorme Zahl deutscher Journalisten in den USA abgelehnt wurde, kontaktierte Feder den Vertreter des Emergency Rescue Committee in Marseille, Varian Fry, der ihn wiederum in Verbindung mit der brasilianischen Botschaft in Vichy setzte. Trotz des Verbotes der Einwanderung von Juden leitete Botschafter Souza Dantas Feders Visumsantrag nach Brasilien weiter. In einem Brief vom 7. Februar 1941 informierte ihn die Botschaft, er und seine Frau würden dauerhafte Visa für Brasilien erhalten. Außerdem gab ihm der Botschafter ein Empfehlungsschreiben für die Zeitung A Noite in Rio de Janeiro. (wiki) // " . The democratic papers, the Berliner Tageblatt and the Vossische Zeitung warred, the enmity between their Chief Editors Theodor Wolff and Georg Bernhard added to the general record of dissension, but particularly unedifying were the family rivalries of the Ullstein-Concern which were aired in public in a court case with the charge of defamation (accompanied by accusations of alleged espionage). Among the scandals which could only add fuel to the anti-Republican and anti-Jewish agitation, as a symptom of the decay of the Republic, this sordid Jewish Bruderzwist zu Ullstein stands out. That the great democratic papers failed in the time of crisis is another fact sufficiently well-documented to need little amplification here. The actual influence of the so-called Judenpresse in Germany has often been grossly exaggerated but this hardly exculpates it in retrospect. On the Berliner Tageblatt, to whose editorial staff Ernst Feder for so many years belonged, these diaries provide much additional evidence for the lassitude and non-combattiveness by which these independent press organs distinguished themselves. The Centralverein for instance constantly sought to place condemnations of antisemitism in their columns (21.8.31.) and these attempts did not meet with any marked degree of success. The careful general line of the Tageblatt was all too often that it was better to avoid stirring up trouble by giving too much prominence to the enemies of the Republic; what good was achieved by all this publicity about Frick and Hugenberg, who only became famous by the attention bestowed on them (16.12.30.)? There was a lowering of tone in the Tageblatt in these years, its Schmutzinserate caused offence to editors and readers alike (12.12.30.; 16.12.30.). There was a distinct tendency to become less political (that politics could be dispensed with was actually given as one of the reasons when Feder was given notice prior to his own.
