This book is an account of two summer voyages undertaken in 1895 and 1897 to Novaya Zemlya and other countries bordering the Barents Sea by a party of four British explorers. Alongside descriptive passages of their travels and encounters, the author and his companions provide detailed ornithological reports on the birds they encountered, including descriptions of their egg-laying and breeding habits. Further ornithological interest also includes discussions on species such as the Bewick's Swan, which was described as rare at the time. A variety of scientific knowledge is presented, including geology, botany, and zoology in addition to the study of birdlife. The reader is provided with interesting and useful information on these subjects, such as the author's notes on mosquito bites and the effects of exposure to the cold on his party. The book is also valuable for its record of meteorological data, including ice conditions and wind direction. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Add to basketA cornerstone account of one of the most ambitious Arctic undertakings of the nineteenth century, Sir George Naress Narrative of a Voyage to the Polar Sea documents the 1875-76 British expedition in H.M. Ships Alert and Discovery. Conceived to push farther north than any previous attempt, the expedition combined geographical exploration with extensive scientific observation, charting new high-latitude regions while conducting studies in geology, zoology, meteorology, and sea-ice conditions. Nares's detailed narrative, together with Feilden's natural history notes, offers a vivid record of extreme polar travel, overwintering in the High Arctic, sledge journeys toward the Pole, and the challenges faced by crew and scientists alike. Long regarded as a classic of polar exploration literature, the work stands as both an important historical document and a compelling chronicle of human endurance at the edge of the known world. Narrative of A Voyage to the Polar Sea During 1875-6 in H.M. Ships 'Albert' and 'Discovery', by Capt. Sir G.S. Nares, R.N., K.C.B., F.R.S., Commander of the Expedition. With Notes on the Natural History edited by H.W. Feilden, F.G.S, C.M.Z.S., F.R.G.S., Naturalist to the Expedition. In Two Volumes (complete). Published by Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, London 1878. Third Edition. A very good, handsome, set of 2 volumes which have been expertly rebound with tan leather spines with raised bands and gilt titles, with brown linen over boards. With light wear and bumping. Soundly bound, with new cream endpapers and rear pocket to volume I. The text is very good throughout. Clean and bright with just occasional scattered spotting. The woodburytype photographic prints are particularly striking. There is some light staining (mostly to the top margin) to a few of the Plates in Volume II. The bound-in fold-out map in Vol II has no tears. The large fold-out map housed in the pocket of Vol I has neat tape repairs to the rear, but the map presents nicely. A desirable set of this classic polar text. Text in English. Vol I: xl + 395pp + 3 Photographic plates + 1 Illustrated Plate + fold-out map in pocket at rear; Vol II: viii + 378pp + 3 Photographic plates + 6 Illustrated Plates + fold-out map near the front. With additional illustrations in the text. All images present as called for. Dimensions: each volume approx 225mm high x 150mm wide x 40mm deep. Weight: approximately 2.04kg (the set - unpacked). No extra postage costs other than that indicated.

First Edition
Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. First Edition. A cornerstone of 19th-century Arctic scientific travel literature.?This seminal record of high-Arctic natural history, documenting two private scientific expeditions to the largely unmapped reaches of the Barents Sea.? Combining Pearson?s vivid ornithological diaries with Colonel Feilden?s rigorous botanical and geological appendices, this work represents the peak of Victorian 'gentleman-scientist' travel literature. Its detailed observations of bird life on Novaya Zemlya and glacial deposits in Spitsbergen remain primary reference points for modern Arctic environmental studies. KEY FEATURES +++ Visuals: Color frontispiece on card stock depicting the eggs of the Little Stint; 88 photographic plates; and 2 folding maps. +++ Binding: Original green cloth with beveled edges; front board and spine elaborately stamped and titled in gilt. +++ Content: Pearson?s narrative of the 1895 and 1897 voyages, supplemented by technical papers on Botany and Geology by Colonel Feilden. +++ Imprint: London: R.H. Porter, 1899. First Edition. +++ Specs: Octavo; 9.5 x 7.25 inches; xiv, 335 pages. CONDITION +++ THE BOOK: The bindings are tight and square with no structural failures. The internal pages are clean, showing only light, even toning and minor occurrences of offsetting from the plates. There is light foxing to the edges of the text block. The original green cloth is well-preserved with bright gilt and only minimal shelf handling wear. +++ DUST JACKET: Not issued. SCHOLARLY FEATURES +++ Scientific Rigor: Feilden?s appendices on glacial deposits in Green Harbour, Spitsbergen, provide early evidence for the study of Arctic geomorphology. Very few English-language accounts from this period provide such granular detail on this specific Russian Arctic archipelago. +++ Ornithological Landmark: Significant for the first detailed photographic and descriptive records of breeding habits for several high-latitude avian species. +++ Design: A classic example of the R.H. Porter style, utilizing high-quality card stock for color plates to ensure scientific accuracy in oology. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE ? Henry J. Pearson was an industrialist turned naturalist whose wealth allowed for the chartering of private vessels to explore the inhospitable North. His partnership with Colonel H. W. Feilden?a veteran of the 1875-76 British Arctic Expedition?provided the technical credibility that elevated this from a simple travelogue to a significant scientific record. The voyages targeted Novaya Zemlya and the Barents Sea at a time when these regions were still largely blank spaces on the map of European natural history. The text captures the transitional moment when Arctic exploration moved from the search for the North Pole to the systematic cataloging of the Arctic?s biological and geological diversity. Colonel Feilden?s contributions are particularly noteworthy; as an experienced Arctic traveler, his focus on glacial deposits and botany provides a 'deep-time' context to Pearson?s observations of the living landscape. Together, they documented an environment that is now undergoing rapid transformation, making their 1899 observations vital baseline data for current climate research. SUBJECTS: Arctic Exploration, Ornithology, Novaya Zemlya, Barents Sea, Glacial Geology, Spitsbergen, Victorian Natural History, Travel Literature, Science, Arcticana.
