Published in 1938 by Rhein-Verlag Zurich, with xv+464 pages, thick octavo (8vo). Ernst Ferand, a teacher and a music scholar, published this book in 1938. The book was notable because it was the firs…t and only comprehensive historical study of improvisation in European music, and that remains true even until today. EX-UNIVERSITY LIBRARY, but never circulated, and otherwise is at least Very Good condition. Sturdy blue cloth-covered boards with bright gilt lettering on front and spine. Cloth binding remains remarkably fresh and crisp, is very clean and stain-free. The cloth shows very little wear, but NOTE: there is a 1" tear to the cloth in the rear hinge from the top of the spine downward. This tear is inconsequential and is cosmetic only, does not affect the structural integrity of the book, does not penetrate through to the interior hinge. There is wear and a bit of fraying to the cloth at the top of the spine. Small pin-pricks of wear to the cloth right at the corner tips. Cloth binding has no other flaws. Internally Fine condition, pages softly, lightly age-toned, but have no flaws. NOTE: Former library book, please expect library markings and indicia. The book is quite clean and stain-free, square and straight, very firm and tight in its binding, no pages are loose, torn, folded, creased, or missing. The interior hinges are sound and undamaged, the corners are sharp and unbumped. All pages are clean and stain free, and all text is sharp and legible. Aside from any library markings, there is no writing, underlining, highlighting, or other such markings anywhere in the book.
