Spine repaired. Ferdinando Altieri was an Italian language professor living in London during the first few decades of the eighteenth century. While the details of his life are not very familiar to history, he is known for writing helpful grammar books to assist his students in learning a foreign language. Altieri's students were mostly young English noblemen about to embark on a Grand Tour, thus Altieri wished to impart some basic conversational skills for touring and establish a "true and easy method" for learning Italian by English residents. Altieri's first grammar book, the Gramatica Inglese per gl'Italiani, was published in London by William Innys in 1728. This edition is the new and expanded version with the vocabulary. It has the dual Italian-English and English-Italian parts, separately titled. Altieri's Italian Grammar was reprinted more times throughout the later eighteenth century: 1750, 1763, 1765, 1784 (as here) and again in 1787 all of these editions remain rare in institutions and on the market. The study of Italian enjoyed a renewed interest in eighteenth century England, partly due to the increased appeal for Italian culture: literature, opera, and arts. The creation of grammar texts and language manuals, in several Continental tongues, thrived at this time where the authors of new text books strove to present reformattedrules for facilitated study.
