(Nobel site) "The possible existence of a potential interaction between neutron and electron has been investigated by examining the asymmetry of thermal neutron scattering from xenon." (abstract) "When the neutron experiments were at the end of their obvious and interesting extension, Leona Marshall and Fermi sat down and discussed the various possible neutron interactions. Mrs. Marshall recalls that her suggestion and urging led to the experiment on neutron-electron interaction (in xenon gas) described in this paper. The result was negative, but with a limit of error smaller than the magnitude of the effect which they estimated from meson theory. They were not aware of the interaction between the Pauli moment and the electric field of the electron, discovered only later by Foldy." (H. L. "Leona Woods [Marshall] was 23 in 1942, the only woman present when Enrico Fermi's nuclear pile at the University of Chicago went critical and into the history books. "In statistical mechanics [Fermi] had written subtle papers on the ergodic hypothesis and on quantum theory. [In this paper] he developed an original form of analyzing collisions of charged particles" (History of Science: The Wenner Collection). Here Fermi "attempted to explain the retardation of swiftly moving particles by resolving the electric field of the charged particles into its harmonics, then comparing it with a radiation field having a suitable frequence distribution" (Stolzenburg). As Bohr understood it, Fermi wanted "to develop a theory of the stopping of swiftly moving particles and of the ionization produced by them in which a mechanical description of the collisions is altogether disregarded" (ibid). "[This paper describes Fermi's development of "the field produced by the charged particle by the Fourier integral and used the information from optical processes to determine the result of the collision" (Wenner) "[Fermi] compares the result of the interaction between the particle and the atom with the action of a number of harmonic radiation fields so chosen that the superposition of the electric forces at the position of the atom represents the rapidly changing electric field to which the electrons in the atom are subjected as a result of the swiftly passing particle. By estimating the action of each of these radiation fields by means of the laws holding for the absorption of X-rays, Fermi obtains values for the total ionization that agree with the experimental results in order of magnitude" (Stolzenburg, 71, 200). "This method was later refined and better justified on the basis of quantum mechanics and is generally known as the Weizsäcker-Williams method" (Wenner). With respect to the Wentzel paper, this is Wentzel's quantum theory formula for dispersion based on the correspondence principle, not to be confused with Wentzel's theory of interference presented earlier in the same year. "In Wentzel's formula the resonance frequency in dispersion is somewhat different from the natural spectroscopic frequency and causes a dissymmetry in dispersion which Wentzel claims is supported by experimental evidence in hydrogen" (Bulletin of the National Research Council, Issues 51-54, 165). "Wentzel supports a point of view according to which the quantum-theoretical dispersion formula. must be regarded as a kind of distorted classical dispersion formula" (van der Waerden, Sources of Quantum Mechanics, 237). He published more than 250 papers and essays in total. Hund made pivotal contributions to quantum theory - especially concerning the structure of the atom and of molecular spectra" (Wikipedia). Very slight ghosting at the spine from the removal of a spine label; small area blackened to match cloth. Regardless, a handsome volume solidly and tightly bound in black cloth over marbled paper boards; slight rubbing at the edges. Bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition.

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of an important experiment in early fission research that was also led directly to Albert Einstein's famous letter to President Roosevelt urging his understanding of the potential lethality of chain fission reactions and prompting him to start the Manhattan Project. It had already bee…n determined that there existed an abundant emission of neutrons from uranium under the action of slow neutrons. While at Columbia, Szilard, Fermi, and Anderson sought to study the production and absorption of neutrons in uranium - working specifically in this paper to "ascertain whether and to what extent the number of neutrons emitted exceeds the number absorbed" (Szilard et al, Physical Review 56, August 1, 1939, 284). They found that the question could be "investigated by placing a photo-neutron source in the center of a large water tank and comparing, with and without uranium in the water, the number of thermal neutrons present in the water" (ibid). The experiment the physicists designed for a chain reaction device used "water as a "moderator" to slow fast neutrons produced by fissioning nuclei to an energy where they would sustain a chain reaction" (AIP Portal). Szilard maintained many contacts in the industrial and political spheres and was able to procure a large amount of uranium-235 (200 kg.) "as well as a radium-beryllium neutron source containing more than 2g of radium. The oxide was filled into longish, cylindrical cans, which were arranged in a regular pattern. The source was placed in the centre and the whole assembly put in a tank containing a 10% solution of manganese sulphate in water. The activity of the manganese was a measure for the neutron intensity and was found to be ten percent higher if the uranium was in place" (Brandt, Harvest of a Century, 279). By this means it was ascertained that more neutrons were emitted by the uranium than absorbed. (See Collected Papers of Enrico Fermi Vol II, p. 11). The experiments had revealed that the hydrogen in water itself absorbs too many neutrons to be an effective moderator", but the meaning was clear that the chain reaction and with it the use of nuclear energy was within reach" (Brandt, 279; AIP Portal). While Anderson, Fermi, and Szilard chose to end their paper cautiously, writing "More work is] required before we can conclude that a chain reaction is possible in mixtures of uranium and water", Szilard thought it time to contact Albert Einstein. (Anderson et al., PR 56, p. 286). Immediately upon completion of the paper, Szilard contacted Einstein, convincing him to write a letter to President Roosevelt (largely if not wholly drafted by Szilard) that warned of the military implications of the discovery of chain fission and the immensely lethal damage that could be wrought by an atomic bomb. Specifically, the letter warned that Germany was capable of developing atomic bombs and that the United States should develop its own nuclear program. As Slizard had hoped, the letter prompted Roosevelt to action, eventually resulting in the Manhattan Project's development of the first atomic bombs. In one stroke, Fermi h…ad solved the major problem of beta decay: How do electrons come out of the nucleus if there are non to begin with? In the paper he coined the term neutrino and his groundbreaking work awarded him the Nobel Prize in physics in 1938.How pioneering and daring Fermi's theory was became clear when he first submitted his paper to the prestigious journal Nature. The journal's editor turned it down because "it contained speculations which were too remote from reality", consequently it became published in Zeitschrift für Physik. Eventually six years later, in 1939, Nature published Fermi's paper.In late 1933 Fermi wrote his famous article offering an elegant solution to a well know problem: Fermi proposed an entire new force of nature, the weak force. "This new force, together with gravity, electromagnetism, and the strong interaction which binds the particles of the nucleus, constitutes the family of forces presently known in physics. The should account for the whole universe. Weak interactions [forces] occur between all particles and are thus unlike electromagnetism or strong interactions, which are restricted to certain particles. The first manifestation of the weak interaction to be treated in detail was the beta decay." (DSB, IV, p. 579b).The "canonical formalism of Heisenberg and Pauli gave rise, in the thirties and forties, to many applications of which the most important may be mentioned here: 1934 Enrico Fermi gave the formal explanation of beta-radioactivity of atomic nuclei by making use of the hypothesis formulated by Pauli in 1930 which postulated the existence."
