Softcover. Condition: g- to vg. First book edition. Large quarto (11 1/4 x 8"). 44, [2]pp. Original printed wrappers. Tipped in frontispiece portrait of the author. Originally published in 1909 as a journal article, Berlage's essay "Art and Society" proposes a new age of culture focused on socialist principles of fraternity. Unfortunately, the author's internationalist dream burst like a bubble at the outbreak of WWI in August 1914. Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856-1934), the noted Dutch architect and architectural philosopher, created a series of buildings and a body of writings from 1886 to 1909 that were among the first efforts to probe the problems and possibilities of modernism. His Amsterdam Stock Exchange, with its rational mastery of materials and space, has long been celebrated for its seminal influence on the architecture of the 20th century. Illustrated with 93 b/w photographic figures, as well as two full-page, and a double photographic plate depicting the new Amsterdam Stock Exchange "Art and Society" opens a new chapter in the history of European modernism. Wrappers foxed, partly creased, with sporadic closed tears along edges. Sporadic foxing throughout. Text in French. Wrappers in overall fair to good-, interior in good to very good condition.
