They only occur as illustrations in the book. Leger has entirely appropriated these poems, leaving out all interpunction. The text was written in calligraphy. No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Once listed, I believe this will be the only such New Year's Card with Nadia Léger's signature or signed inscription. On the front is a reproduction of one of the four versions of Fernand Léger's painting, Les Trois Musiciens.'Les Trois musiciens personifies the Jazz Age and the joie de vivre of Paris in the years leading up to the war. One version of the painting hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Léger took his inspiration here from the performers at the bals musettes, where working-class Parisians would come on any given Saturday and Sunday afternoon to dance to the melody of an accordionist, the harmony of a horn player and the rhythmic thump of a bass player. Sometimes accompanied by a chanteuse like Edith Piaf, their music resonated in the dance halls of hard-scrabble neighborhoods throughout the city and became anthems of the urban life.' Besides being a fine artist in her own right, Nadia Léger ran the Académie Moderne with Georges Bauquier, whom she married after Léger's death in 1955. She was involved in creating many of the works attributed to Léger after the war. She collaborated with architect Andreï Svetchine to build the Fernand Léger Museum in Biot, Alpes-Maritimes near Antibes in 1960, which was donated to the French state in 1967. The French Minister of Culture, André Malraux, opened the Musée national Fernand Léger on 4 February 1969. She also converted Léger's farm at Lisores in Normandy into a museum, the Ferme-Musée Fernand Léger, completed in 1970.' I have provided photographs of all four sides of this large 'card'. It is in good shape, no tears, one crease at the top inside corner of the signed page, and one at the top left corner of the illustration. There is also a small stain off the top edge of the signed page, and as you can see there is some spotting/foxing on all four sides, though the light of the camera accentuates it iin a way the naked eyes does not. The blank rear side is by far the most foxed. Inscribed by Author(s).

A very heartfelt A.L.S. 8vo. 2 pages, no place, December 2nd 1950, in French (translated), to Daniel [Daniel-Henry Hahnweiler], his close friend and art representative, conveying the sad news on the death of his wife Jeanne, in part: ".I have bad news for you. After struggling against death for two months Jeanne died Thursday during the night; fortunately she didn't suffer too much, a state of total exhaustion saved her from a painful end. I know of your sympathy and of the close friendship you shared. but I still wanted to write you these few lines. There will be no funeral at Paris. but the burial will take place at Andeleys in the family vault. Mu sincere friendship goes out to you, dear old man . and to your kids." Boldly signed and in excellent condition. French painter and sculptor whose earliest works were a form of Cubism in which he gradually modified into a more figurative and populist style. He is regarded as a forerunner of Pop Art.

[ca 1948] | 14.60 x 19 cm | 2 pages sur un feuillet sous chemise | Magnifique lettre autographe signée et inédite de Fernand Léger sur le jazz américain et les couleurs, adressée à Gaston Criel, auteur d'un essai pionnier sur le «?Swing?». Le peintre se remémore son exil aux États-Unis de 1940 à 1945, parle de Louis Armstrong et de sa captivante découverte du jazz expérimental à New York, en compagnie des peintres afro-américains de la Harlem Renaissance. 29 lignes à l'encre noire, rédigées sur un feuillet. La lettre autographe est présentée sous une chemise en demi maroquin vert sapin, plats de papier vert à motifs stylisés, contreplats doublés d'agneau vert, étui bordé du même maroquin, ensemble signé Goy & Vilaine. Léger répond à Georges Criel et le félicite de son essai sur le jazz américain?: «?Votre «?swing?» m'intéresse. Vous avez trouvé un style sonore qui colle au sujet?». Criel avait en effet adopté dans son essai, intitulé Swing, le style très rythmé du «?bebop?» que Léger avait eu l'occasion d'entendre à New York. Cette première étude sur le jazz en langue française fut unanimement saluée, de Sartre à Stravinsky en passant par Gide, Senghor, ou Poulenc. La lettre, non-datée, fut écrite en 1948, l'année de publication de l'essai de Criel. Après un long exil aux Etats-Unis entre 1940 et 1945, Léger était reparti pour la France et avait pris sa carte au parti communiste. Installé à Paris, il réouvre à la même période son académie de peinture dans un nouveau local boulevard de Clichy, qui lui vaudra un afflux d'étudiants américains, anciens GI démobilisés, comme Sam Francis ou Kenneth Noland. Dès 1924, Léger avait fait la rencontre simultanée du jazz et de l'Amérique par son film expérimental Ballet mécanique, tourné par les Américains Dudley Murphy et Man Ray, sur des musiques de Duke Ellington et George Antheil. Trois séjours à New York entre 1931 et 1939, pleins de projets et de rencontres avec l'écrivain Dos Passos notamment avaient familiarisé Léger avec cette métropole emblématique de la modernité. Mais c'est son exil durant la guerre qui l'introduisit réellement à l'Amérique et à la musique jazz?: «?J'ai pu pendant 5 ans d'Amérique réagir pour ou contre cette expression nègre?». En 1941, il découvrit le pays lors d'une traversée en bus vers l'Ouest, donna des conférences en Californie et fit projeter son Ballet Mécanique à la célèbre université expérimentale de Black Mountain en Caroline du Nord. C'est également aux Etats-Unis qu'il inventa en 1942 un nouvel usage de la couleur, en s'inspirant du jeu des projecteurs publicitaires balayant les façades de Times Square?: la couleur se trouve désormais dissociée du dessin, et donne naissance à sa toile Starfish (Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum), sa série des «?Cyclistes?» (Biot, Musée national Fernand Léger) et des «?Plongeurs?», dont il réalise un exemplaire monumental en 1943 pour la maison de l'architecte de Rockefeller, Wallace K. Harrison, à Long Island. Le jazz, synonyme de modernité et de libération, fut également l'occasion d'explorer la couleur. Léger donne une saisissante description synesthésique de ses expériences sonores?: «?J'ai souvent pensé en les écoutant à des équivalences colorées possibles. Les sardanes espagnols par exemple c'est de la couleur pure. Jaune bleu rouge. Le Jazz comporterait souvent des nuances?». Il assista dans les clubs new-yorkais à la naissance du bebop, nouvelle forme de jazz au rythme effréné et à la virtuosité époustouflante, dont les innovations harmoniques et rythmiques marquèrent le peintre dans ses compositions. Le peintre se remémore la découverte de ce jazz furieux des années 1940?: «?La confusion du départ m'intéressait surtout. Leur côté animal instinctif s'y donnant à plein; des cris sourd aigus. Des bruits incontrolable [sic] ayant une valeur spontanée étonnante, ensuite la domestication de cette jolie sauvagerie s'établ.
