Condition: Fine. Fernand Piet (illustrator). This beautifully illustrated, lithographed poster is from LâEstampe Moderne. The work was published by one of the best printers of the day, Champenois. The lithographs were printed under the supervision of C. Masson and H. Piazza and published in Paris between May 1897 and April 1899.The work was sent out every month with four prints and a cover with art work by Alphonse Mucha by subscription only. The intention of this work was to âreanimate and disseminate the taste for printsâ (issue 24), thus 2000 of each print were published plus 100 on Japan paper.This famous collection included works by major Art Nouveau artists including Alphonse Mucha, Louis Rhead, Marcel Lenoir, Henri Boutet, Henri Fantin-Latour, Edward Burne-Jones, and Thà ophile Steinlen. Every print has the blind stamp of a womanâs profile in a lower corner. The large format lithographs are on excellent quality paper. When available we will include a tissue descriptive paper original to the work.The lithographs were done by the artists, rather than after, which makes the plates original Art Nouveau. --- The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. Ce sont ainsi 100 estampes qui paraissent au total, couvrant les courants artistiques majeurs de la fin du XIXème siècle: Symbolisme, Art Nouveau, Préraphaélites, Orientalistes et Belle Epoque. Chaque livraison de quatre estampes est tirée à 2000 exemplaires vendus 3,50F et 100 sur papier Japon proposés à 10F. Henri Piazza prévoit également un tirage confidentiel de très grand luxe: 50 exemplaires sur Japon à grandes marges et 50 en noir sur Chine au prix considérable de 30F. Cette estampe d'un beau format est superbement imprimée sur l'un des plus prestigieux papiers: le Chine. «Malgré toutes ses qualités, le papier de Chine, trop inconsistant, doit sa réputation, non pas à sa propre beauté, mais bien à ses affinités particulières avec l'encre d'impression. Son tissu, lisse et mou tout ensemble, est plus apte qu'aucun autre à recevoir un beau tirage. Cette propriété fait rechercher le papier de Chine pour le tirage des gravures.» (Anatole France). L'intérêt des collectionneurs français pour les affiches artistiques s'amplifie au début des années 1890. Octave Uzanne, pour qualifier cette fièvre invente le terme d'«affichomanie». L'affiche, à l'origine populaire et placardée dans les rues de la capitale, devient alors objet d'art et son support éphémère se fait précieux et voué à la conservation. Piazza décide de soustraire l'affiche à sa vocation publicitaire et de l'élever au rang d'uvre d'art à part entière au même titre que le livre illustré de luxe. Lithograph inspired by an extract from a text by Pierre Burman describing a market scene. Magnificent French monthly publication issued between May 1897 and April 1899, L'Estampe moderne consists of original chromolithographs which, unlike other magazines such as Les Maîtres de l'Affiche and as stipulated on the tissue guards, were created specially by each artist for the magazine. Thus 100 prints appeared in total, covering the major artistic movements of the late 19th century: Symbolism, Art Nouveau, Pre-Raphaelites, Orientalists and Belle Epoque. The book (23,5 x 16,5) is one of the 20 numbered copies (nr.4) with tipped-in reproductions of pieces of scenery designed by Piet Mondriaan for a 1926 production of a play written by Seuphor. ISBN 9067713805 The in-4° portfolio contains 5 baryta prints (22 x 30) with the rubberstamp of Michel Seuphor on the verso side and signed by Seuphor in the margin of the recto side, protected by a serpente. 2 pictures of the Mondriaan studio, a portrait of Mondriaan, selfportrait of Seuphor and a collage. The original drawing is signed by Seuphor and dated (19)97. Keptin redcloth slipcase. In fine condition, notwithstanding some faint waterstains on the outside of the slipcase.
