Pages 258-303 feature a facsimile of Jack Thorp's 1908 edition with the book's extensive text being general commentary and music for each song with sources for individual bibliographies, texts of variations, recording and manuscript lists, a cowboy word and phrase lexicon, etc.

Cattleman Thorp spent some 50 years riding the range; his original publication represents the first systematic effort to track down western cowboy songs and poems.and western songs. With studied efforts, the music notations are drawn from pre-1930 sources.
