Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'The Ritz Carltons' is a sparkling and sophisticated satire of upper-class life in Jazz Age New York. Written by Fillmore Hyde and featuring illustrations by the legendary Rea Irvin, this classic work of humor lampoons the social-climbing antics and absurd pretensions of the city's wealthy…elite during the 1920s.The narrative centers on the fictional 'Ritz Carltons,' a family whose every move is calculated to maintain their standing in the highest echelons of society. From the complexities of hosting the perfect dinner party to the frantic scramble for invitations to the most exclusive events, the text provides a keen-eyed look at the foibles and status-seeking behavior of the rich and famous. Irvin's iconic illustrations perfectly complement the text, capturing the fashion, flair, and architectural elegance of the era with a distinctive artistic style. As a notable example of early 20th-century social commentary, 'The Ritz Carltons' remains a delightful and witty read for those interested in the history of New York, the evolution of American humor, and the timeless nature of social ambition. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. A vivid and accessible wartime portrait of the Soviet Union, Russia Then and Always was published in 1944 by Coward-McCann, Inc. at a crucial moment in world history. Written by Nina Verhovskoy Hyde and Fillmore Hyde, this volume blends sweeping historical perspective wi…th on-the-ground observation, offering readers both the background of Russia's past and insight into its evolving role amid World War II. The book opens with intriguing maps and features engaging explanatory text that makes complex geopolitical developments understandable for general readers and scholars alike. Its binding in red cloth with gilt spine titles exemplifies the sturdy mid-century production typical of wartime editions. This particular copy is distinguished by its provenance: it comes from the private library of Herbert Faulkner West (1898-1974), an American author, educator, and notable figure in 20th=century literary circles. West's eclectic scholarly interests and friendships with writers such as Henry Miller, Robert Frost, and Anaïs Nin make this example especially significant for collectors of literary history and association copies. A tasteful bookplate affixed to the front endpaper attests to this distinguished ownership, adding an extra layer of appeal and narrative resonance to the book. His life's work, including his correspondence with his Henry Miller, can be viewed online at the Dartmouth Library Archives and Manuscripts. Among Professor West's books were "The Nature Writers" "A Modern Conquistador," which was a biography of Cunningham Graham, "The Mind on the Wing: A Book for Readers and Collectors," and "Modern Book Collecting for the Impecunious Amateur." In 1938 he founded the Friends of the Dartmouth Library, which was instrumental in contributing many rarities to its collection. Professor West served in World War I as an artilleryman in France before entering Dartmouth. He joined the faculty as an instructor on graduation in 1922 and was awarded an M.A in 1924. He received another M.A from Harvard in 1933. The physical condition is attractive for its age: boards are clean with modest wear at the spine ends and corners, the gilt lettering remains bright, and the interior pages are intact and free from underlining or annotations. While the original dust jacket is not present, the binding is solid and the contents are clean, making this an excellent addition for collectors interested in wartime nonfiction, Russian studies, or provenance-rich volumes from notable private libraries. Overall, this 1944 first edition stands out not only for its engaging content but also for its connection to Herbert Faulkner West's personal collection, offering both intellectual and collectible value.
