First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A beautifully preserved first printing of this important documentary volume presenting the surviving correspondence of Josiah Wedgwood, the pioneering English potter, entrepreneur, and industrial innovator. Edited by Ann Finer and noted art historian George Savage, the collection reveals Wedgwood's artistic development, scientific experiments in ceramic chemistry, partnerships with Thomas Bentley and the circle of Enlightenment thinkers, and his engagement with political and social issues of the late eighteenth century. The book is printed in England in Monotype Bulmer type and includes a suite of plates and facsimiles, with sepia-toned illustrated endpapers depicting the historic Etruria Works. This copy is in Near Fine condition. The beige linen boards are exceptionally clean and bright with only the slightest shelf evidence; the decorative medallion and spine label remain crisp. Binding is tight and square, pages are bright and unmarked, and the text block is clean throughout. Only a neatly written 1971 gift inscription appears on the front free endpaper, along with light, routine foxing to the endpapers, both consistent with the age and production of the book. The copyright page states 'First published 1965' with no later impressions, confirming this as a true First Edition, First Printing, consistent with British publishing practice.
