Original Wraps. A lot consisting of eight catalogs issued by Henry W. Wenning, Modern Rare Books, of New Haven, Connecticut, representing a nearly complete run. Included are Catalogues Numbers 3-9 and Supplementary List One, the latter probably preceding all the other catalogues included. All in very good condition, save some marginal check marks in Number Nine. We believe this was the last catalog he issued. The supplementary list has an address label on the rear cover, otherwise there are no marks of mailing. Wenning achieved a fine reputation in his relatively low-key career as a bookseller and was one of the creators of the modern first market, accumulating and selling material of the highest quality. His catalogs are all the more impressive in having little preceding foundation to build on. All the catalogues are undated; he was active in the 1960s through the early 1980s. Wenning died in 1987. The Supplementary List, judging from the form of address, precedes the introduction of zip codes and area codes. Catalogue Five offered a "fairly close to complete" Samuel Beckett collection of more than fifty primary items and supplementary material, including even a presentation copy of Murphy. That catalogue was issued in 1962, according to cataloging data on WorldCat.

Add to basketThe Pippets of Solihull were a Roman Catholic family that worked closely on ecclesiastical designs with the Gothic Revival firm Hardman & Co (whose archives are held by the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery). Wilfrid also collaborated with J. B. Trinick on the striking illustrations to A. E. Waite's rosicrucian 'Album of the Great Symbols of the Paths' (1917-21; copy in the British Museum Department of Prints and Drawings). Eleven attractive illustrations in black ink (over pencil draft). Each on a piece of board ('Faced with Whatman Hand-made Paper'), and ranging in size from 16 x 19.5 cm to 15.5 x 13.5 cm. All in good condition, lightly aged and worn. Each is annotated in pencil, several with the line of poetry being illustrated, and some with instructions for transferring the illustration to a block. Several of the illustrations are to the ballad 'The Three Men of Yardley Chase', with one showing the three men (George, Ben and Hob) standing in front of a tree used on the front cover when the ballad was issued as a separate fascicule ('Part I', with 'Leather and Thread and Tears', 3rd ed, 1925). This illustration, and two others, are signed 'Wilfrid Pippet', while the other eight are signed 'W. P.' The most striking illustration (featuring on p.13 of the printed volume) is of the ghosts of the three men dancing over their graves around a tree with an owl in it. Two illustrations depict the doorway of the 'WHITE HART HOTEL | HELEN SMITH', one with three figures in Georgian dress in the foreground. Another shows the three men with 'Hedge-hog meat', and another (depicting a beggar with a raven on his shoulder is captioned with a line from the poem 'Base people bred to mar their peace'. There are also: a drinking scene (including mother with baby), a dandy admiring himself in the mirror with a woman in a bonnet behind him, a man and woman in Tudor costume, three men (with a badger) listening to a beggar with a crow on his shoulder, and two lovers, in seventeenth-century garb, in front of two trees with owl, pixie and white rabbit. Add to basketSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. 1p, 16mo. In fair condition, lightly aged and ruckled. Addressed to 'Dear Maurice' and signed 'A Black'. For Lothian see 'Memoirs of Adam Black' (1885). He asks him to 'glance at the inclosed': 'The description appears to me abundantly broad. And I hope to get the legion of proprietors in a trim to sign.' He concludes by stating that he will 'send for it' that evening, 'as Mr Bruce wishes to have it to send to Dymock tomorrow morning'. 'Mr Bruce' may be the future Sir James Knight Bruce (1791-1866); 'Dymock' is William Dymock, the Edinburgh advocate. "Maurice" might well be Maurice Lothian, a procurator fiscal.

Condition: Good. - Close of a letter penned in black ink on a slip of paper, approximately 1-1/8 inches high by 4-5/8 wide. Signed "With my kind Comps to your sister, believe [me I] remain, dear Miss Mounsey, yours very truly / Vincent Novello". The top edge of the slip is slightly unevenly cut. Fragments of gray paper adhere to the verso where it has been removed from an album. Good. Vincent Novello [1781-1861] was an English musician, composer and music teacher. Many of his compositions were sacred music, much of it very popular. One of his greatest contributions to the musical life of his country was the introduction to England, together with Christian Ignatius Latrobe, of unknown works by great composers such as the Masses of Haydn and Mozart and the music of Palestrina. In 1811, he founded the publishing firm of Novello & Co., which was carried on and developed by his son.Novello sends his compliments to the recipient's sister. He is writing therefore either to musician Ann Sheppard Mounsey or to her sister. Ann Mounsey [1811-1891] was a pianist, organist and composer. She became the organist at various London churches and performed at concerts and as an accompanist.
