Engraving & etching on paper trimmed to platemark (26 x 19.5 cm). [Amsterdam c 1600]. Laterally reversed copy of a bust portrait in three quarter view facing right after Lucas van Leyden (1494-1533) based on a woodcut portrait by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) to commemorate the Emperor s death in 1519. Maximilian is seen wearing a rimmed hat and the Order of the Golden Fleece round his neck; he is leaning on a window-sill decorated with a carpet showing Imperial arms and two floral de signs; monogram and date in plate upper right: a decorative figure with a horned head-dress holds a tablet marked L 1520 copied after the original monogram (Lucas van Leyden s signature & date of first version of printing 1520). Lucas van Leyden was the first northern artist to combine the two techniques in the same print.
