This followed the 4th Impression of the first edition 1944. Edited with an Introduction by Theodore Spencer, and with CRITICALLY important additional material. The Foreword is by John J. Slocum and Herbert Cahoon, who were Joyce's bibliographers. This has not been rescued from a library, so there are no marks in the text block. The clean and tight binding is in green cloth covered boards. The superb illustration on the jacket's cover is by ROBIN JACQUES. The inside flap of the jacket's dustwrapper is price clipped. No former owner marks.

But this is the FIRST REVISED edition, and it has more wonderful work than the original 1916 edition. Anyone who seeks this artist's work will want this. Faults? Well, the illustrated board covers are chipped and worn, but that's pretty usual in a book this old. Beautifully reproduced work. Printed on decent high quality art paper, too.

He was also created a knight and Marshal of France by Louis XIV, and was a diplomat for Louis XIV and Philippe II, Duke of Orléans. François Pierre de la Varenne, 1615-1678 in Dijon), Burgundian by birth, was the author of Le Cuisinier françois (1651), one of the most influential cookbooks in early modern French cuisine. Small chip at bottom of spine. Toning to endpapers and text, occasional foxing. Previous ownership inscription in pencil on front flyleaf. Housed in a brown cloth chemise and slipcase, title in gilt on brown morocco spine. (American Imprints 30520) (Sabin 39032). The title page claims this book to be "The first book ever stereotyped in America." This is untrue, however, due to a printing of the Bible by the Philadelphia Bible Society with plates imported from London in 1812.
