Protorhyssalus goldmani gen. n., sp. n., in a new subfamily of braconid wasps, the Protorhyssalinae, is described from Late Cretaceous amber fossils from New Jersey, USA. The Protorhyssalinae appears to be cyclostome and shows a similar set of plesiomorphic characters to the extant Rhyssalinae. However, it possesses hindwing vein 2-CU, a feature only found among the cyclostome braconids in the rare and putatively primitive Chilean subfamily Apozyginae. New taxa: Protohyssalinae n. subfam., Protorhyssalus goldmani gen. n., sp. n. 4 pp., 6 figs, 4.

With around 2,300 British species, almost 10% of British insect species are ichneumonids. They can be found everywhere and studying them is very rewarding, but it is not without its difficulties. This book provides an extensively illustrated key for the identification of the 35 subfamilies of Ichneumonidae known to occur in Britain and Ireland (plus Brachycyrtinae, not yet found here). This is supported by chapters for each subfamily giving a comprehensive review of current knowledge on systematics, biology and host relations together with notes on useful recognition features and references to the most relevant species-level identification literature concerning the British Isles. The list of Hymenoptera in Kloet & Hincks' original edition of this work (1945) was the first supposedly complete one published since 1837. The present checklist incorporates the results of a great deal of further research. However, in only a small proportion of this research has particular attention been paid to the British fauna. Much basic taxonomy still remains to be done, especially in the Parasitica, both in terms of the British fauna and on a wider scale. We hope that this new list will serve to summarize our current knowledge, draw attention to some of the areas where work is needed, and help to stimulate interest in the British Hymenoptera. 159 pp., br. gr. 8.
