Riches in 1872, with bookplate to front pastedown. In the original publisher's full cloth binding, with gilt to spine and front board. Externally sound with shelf wear, bumped to extremities of spine and boards, general light soiling. Bookplate from Stepney Grammar School to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. William Cowper's comic ballad. llustrated throughout, with numerous vignettes and several plates designed by H Fitz-Cook and engraved by J C Whymper. Undated, dated using Copac. William Cowper was an English poet and hymndosit. He was one of the most popular poets of his time. He was one of the forerunners of Romantic poetry. The Diverting History of John Gilpin was a tale told to Cowper from his friend Lady Austen. Gilpin was said to be a wealthy draper from Cheapside of London. The poem tells how his wife and children become separated during a journey to the Bell Inn, Edmonton after he loses control of his horse and is carried to Ware, a town ten miles further. In original green cloth binding with gilt stamping to front board. Externally, generally smart with minor bumping to the extremities. Small loss to cloth at the head and tail of spine due to rubbing. Front hinge is tender. Binder's stamp to rear pastedown, Edmonds and Remnants. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with spotting to the first and last few pages. Instances of light spots throughout. Good. book.

Illustrated throughout by H. Fitz-Cook and engraved by J.C.Whymper. There are a number of sites commemorating the exploits of John Gilpin, most notably Gilpin's Gallop, a street in the village of Stanstead St Margarets said to be on the original route taken by John Gilpin on his unintended journey. The poem was originally published anonymously in the Public Advertiser in 1782, and then published with The Task in 1785. It was very popular, to the extent that pirate copies were being sold all across the country, together with Gilpin books and toys. In original cloth binding with gilt motif to the front board. Externally, sound with light rubbing to extremities and shelfwear to the spine. Both hinges are slightly strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound with bright pages. Light scattered foxing to the first and last pages. Copperplate ink inscription to endpaper, and previous owners bookplate to the front pastedown. Very Good. book.
