Seller: HORSE BOOKS PLUS LLC, Boston, VA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Reprint. Solid reprint hardcover in blue paper covered boards with black spine title. Not exlib. Book tips and spine ends bumped but not rubbed. Text is tight and crisp with age-toning at the periphery and foxing at head of 255 page block. Backstrip is lightly sunned at ends where dj was chipped, as well as head of rear board. Original, un-clipped (and unpriced) dj shows several open chips at head and foot of both frt & rear panels and both spine ends and some rubbing with small chips and color loss at both frt board tips and along frt dj flap fold. Lively color illustration on dj frt and backstrip shows a rearing leopard appaloosa being held down by a circus handler in front of large green & white striped tents roofs over caged animals (lion, tiger, etc). Plain cream colored rear dj panel shows moderate even surface soil and lists five other Children's Book Club selections. This is a brilliantly real story of the circus, based on the author's long practical experience of 'tenting'. Her chief characters are Mike, Mary and Nicky, circus children who are left orphaned and in desperate need. They come across their cousins who own Fisherfield's Circus: they are taken on by them, and spend an exciting 'tenting' season, touring the country and taking part in the busy round of circus life. Olivia Fitz Roy does not dwell only on the glamor of the 'big top'. She presents circus life in the round, with its back-breaking hard work and drugery, its rivalries and jealousies, its frantic behind-the-scenes panics, as well as its exciting moments of reward and thrilling achievement.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. William Showell (illustrator). 1st Edition. The author, Olivia Gwyneth Zoe FitzRoy (1921-1969) lived in Inverewe in the Western Highlands during WW2, while her husband fought in Burma. She penned a series of enchanting family tales which still have a resonance today and of which âOrders to Poachâ is the first and most elusive. This copy has a slight lean to the text block and mild bumping to the top and bottom of the spine, but is otherwise clean and free of inscriptions and (most unusually for a book from 1942) not printed on war-economy paper. A rare opportunity for Fitzroy fans. Please note that if ordering from abroad, any customs charge will be the responsibility of the buyer. All proceeds of sale go to LOROS, a Hospice Charity serving Leicestershire and Rutland.
