The first English translation of this poem by Jami and the first translation from Persian by Edward Fitzgerald, predating his more well known RubÃiyÃt of Omar KhayyÃm. Salámán and Absál was composed in the late fifteenth century as part of Jami's larger work Haft Awrang. Based on an allegorical tale it tells of the love of the Greek prince Salaman for his nurse Absal. Although it must be noted that this is a much condensed edition by Fitzgerald and most likely presented as such because it is a translation from the 1850 Persian printed edition of the text edited by Forbes Falconer (1805-1853). The Falconer edition was compiled from eight manuscripts in British public and private libraries and these texts were compared and condensed to create his definitive edition for print in 1850. The frontispiece showing a game of polo is a reproduction of plate XXII from the first volume of Gore Ouseley's Travels: which itself is a reproduction line engraving of a miniature contained in a copy of the Divan of Hafiz, formerly in the private collection of Ouseley and now in the Bodleian library. First Edition, 8vo, pp.xvi, 84, frontispiece, some scattered foxing, ink inscription and blind stamp to front free endpaper, original publisher's blue ripple-grain cloth, ruled in blind with gilt lettering, spine a little darkened, a little rubbed. 212 x 155mm (8¼ x 6 inches). Provenance: The Fitzgerald Collection of Peter Wills (blind stamp to front free endpaper and original dated invoice from Quaritch loosely inserted).…

FIRST EDITION. 214 x 150 mm. (8 1/2 x 6"). xvi, 84 pp. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt titling, rebacked using most of the original cloth (rear hinge reinforced with translucent library tape. Frontispiece after a Persian miniature depicting a group of Persian noblemen playing polo. Prideaux, pp. 14-16. Corners quite worn, front endpapers a little smudged and frayed, faint soiling to cloth, but the binding solid, and internally fine. This scarce work is Edward FitzGerald's first poetical translation from the Persian, released three years before his famous translation of the "Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam." Written by the Persian poet and mystic Jámi (1414-92), "Salámán and Absál" is an allegorical romance in which the prince Salámán rejects the snare of the senses personified by his nurse and lover Absál, opting instead to move on the path toward Sufi enlightenment. (The story ends with an immolation that consumes Absál but spares her lover, now sufficiently purified to become king.) The narrative is enlivened with much exotic and picturesque detail along the way. The translator FitzGerald (1809-93) spent his entire adult life devoted to literature, especially translation. According to Prideaux, this is the first Persian poem Fitzgerald ever read, having been introduced to the language and poem by his friend, the linguist Edward Cowell. It paved the way for his translation of the Rubaiyat, first published in 1859, on which his literary fame rests. This first edition of "Salámán and Absál" seems to be uncommon in the marketplace: we were able to trace only four copies (one defective) at auction since 1974. …
